I am an English teacher constantly searching for books that will inspire a love for reading, and it seems that wholesome books for older elementary and junior high boys are the most difficult to find. Brady's Trapped in a Video Game is perfect for this group! As the narrator's voice becomes clear, the story is undoubtedly relatable, humorous, and engaging! When I finished the book, I found myself thinking "That's it?!" I'm sure I echo the sentiments of other readers when I say that I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I will definitely recommend this book to students in my own school!

A MUST have for all boys!!!

My 9 (almost 10 year old) LOVES this book! He hasn't been much of a reader but this is the FIRST book he reads without prodding. He talks about it a lot and always tells me what happened. The chapters aren't too long or overwhelming for early chapter readers. An easy read. It's refreshing to find a fun, adventure book without a lot of "dark" themes. A rare find!

This book tells the story of those who brought the Saluki to the West, most notably Florence Amherst, who discovered the dogs while in Egypt and went on to breed 50 litters. Other world travelers who fell under the Salukis' spell included Lady Anne Blunt, Austen Layard and Gertrude Bell. Also covered are lesser-known Saluki aficionados, mainly military officers who hunted with their hounds in Iraq, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt and sought to replicate that experience at home.

About the Author
Brian Patrick Duggan is the Director of Learning Services at California State University, Stanislaus. He has lived with Salukis for over 30 years and has bred 28 champions. Great book for a wonderful breed written by one who knows!

I have had many and plan on having many Salukis, as well as other related - type of dogs. Mr. Duggan has captured why I always come back to Salukis, as so many in the past have. I am not certain as to who domesticated whom, when regarding the breed, but will fully acknowledge that he has followed the recent history of the breed with a studious fidelity that gives credit to his hard work in tracking source material, both written and in interview.
There are no stupid Salukis -- those died in the desert 7000 years ago.

What a treasure!

Yes, this book is about Salukis, but it is about so much more than that. It is a snapshot into the lives of people during the late Victorian and Edwardian era. I found the lives of each individual instrumental with bringing Salukis to the Western world riveting. Their personal comments on their adventures while in the Middle East really brought that time and place to life for me.

Brian Duggan's research is wonderful in its thoroughness and his ability to bring history to life is priceless. This is a book any dog fancier will enjoy... not just saluki fanciers.

"The Voice on the Radio" is the third novel in "The Face on the Milk Carton" series, adding to the saga of Janie Johnson, kidnapped victim who discovers her true identity when she sees her "Missing child" face on a milk carton.

While the first two books focus on Janie, born Jennie Spring, this one takes the reader into the mind of Reeve Shields, Janie's handsome boyfriend, childhood friend and neighbor. He was her Shoulder during the entire discovery process. He is the only one who knows the story as thoroughly as Janie.

Janie was kidnapped when she was three and grew up with a different set of parents, whom she loves dearly. Discovering she was kidnapped was traumatic, to say the least. The first two books detail the difficult process of learning to accept her biological family as well as the people she calls her parents.

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT:
In this book Reeve goes to college and discovers his talent with a microphone at his college radio station. He has a radio voice. On his first gig, he cannot think of a thing to talk about, then, in panic, begins Janie's story. He discovers to his amazement that he is a natural storyteller.

His first installment of Janie's story produces eleven calls of interest. Not the usual crank calls, but real calls. Then twice weekly he adds another tantalizing bit of Janie's story. Now listeners refer to them as janies. Will Reeve do another janie tonight? For the first time the station has a large base of listeners.

Reeve knows he has betrayed Janie's confidence. He has betrayed Janie herself, the girl who means the world to him, but the lure of sirens drives him on.

[Note: While it may seem I have given away important points of the story, the previous three paragraphs don't say much more than what is printed on the back cover.]

I originally intended to give "The Voice" four stars until I wrote the review and realized that this book adds as much to the story as the other two. Often when a novel ends, the reader is left wondering what happens next. "The Voice" continues the story and answers that question. Well, this is what happens next and it isn't pretty.

I'm glad that the transgression was taken seriously

Dude, ow. This is the third Janie Johnson book, and I didn't think Janie's hurt could grow any deeper. But she has one under-utilized source for grief: her boyfriend, Reeve. And when Reeve goes off to college and tries to find a way to stand out from the crowd, he realizes he has one thing that makes him unique: Janie's story. Which he begins to tell on the radio.

What happens from there is a predictable train wreck. I'm glad that the transgression was taken seriously, and that the story doesn't end with easy forgiveness and love, as Janie's sister fears. There are consequences, and they're hard on both Janie and Reeve.

This book really explores the risks parents take by giving their children freedom as they grow older, and the hard decision to reign your technically adult children back in as they continue to make mistakes. This is a central theme in the Janie books, due to Janie's kidnapping, but it's normally shown in the context of minor children, and less people that the state claims are able to make their own decisions.

A good continuation on the series. Has me excited to read the next!

The prose reads more like a second or third draft

Wisdom went into this book, drawn from the author's almost 20 year career in software development. The wisdom can be seen in the topic selection, and the book's progression through its chapters, which is intended to guide the reader to a new results- and leadership-oriented mindset. However, the book is marred by a heavy handed, prescriptive tone without a lot of thoughtful development. The prose reads more like a second or third draft, in that it could be tightened up, reworded, and clarified. Finally, I found a few dozen spelling mistakes, in addition to about a dozen sentences that were hacked up during a rewrite and not properly reassembled.

Overall, while the book has its merits, a reader's time is short and precious. You're better off with other books.

Great examples, great insight into navigating the corporate halls

Great examples, great insight into navigating the corporate halls. As an almost 20 year vet myself, I found lots of little "Oh that's a good idea" type of nuggets here. Ideal for those moving from junior into advanced. Less ideal for those who are already senior but still worth the money IMO. It takes about two days-ish to read for a senior person and, if nothing else, you'll be reminded of lessons you learned 5+ years ago but had forgotten or things that were so "natural" to you but not natural to others. Excellent book.

This guy knows what he's talking about.

Having worked with Dave Copeland and received first-hand much of the wisdom he's laid out in The Senior Software Engineer, I can attest to both his engineering and pedagogical prowess. Generally regarded by his peers as "the engineer that gets 10X done", his approaches increase the output and quality of any organization that he's a part of, while creating an environment of trust and mentorship.

I see The Senior Software Engineer as a complement to "The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master", building upon great engineering practices, with a hefty dose of business and organizational acumen.
