"Closing the Achievement Gap", August 22, 2002
By Josefina Y. Moreno, Newcomer Teacher and graduate student
This book, "Closing the Achievement Gap: How to Reach Limited-Formal-Schooling and Long Term English Learners", is an excellent resource for teachers of older English learners with limited formal schooling or English learners with more conversational than academic fluency. Yvonne S. Freeman and David E. Freeman, professors at the Graduate School at Fresno Pacific University, describe in detail these two types of students and provide four main ideas to help teachers meet the academic needs of these struggling students. The Freemans' also cite research on effective teaching practices and describe three teachers working with these particular students in a multi-grade, a middle, and a high school classroom. All three teachers are successfully implementing research proven theories in their classroom practices to help close the achievement gap.
Overall, the Freemans' did a good job in examining each point thoroughly. The format was concise, comprehensible, and the strategies described can easily be used with my Newcomer students. I thought it was a good idea to present three different perspectives of teachers working with a range of age groups. It demonstrated that the theories and strategies presented can be effective across grade levels.
I recommend that school administrators and professors of teaching candidates also read the book for the strategies presented and for the valuable research on second language acquisition. The academic gap of struggling English learners will only continue to widen if educators and administrators do not become more knowledgeable in this area.

    bar bar bar
    By Rochelle Robinson
The content of this book is not the problem, it is its poor organizational structure. It is redundant and organized in an unhelpful way, so that the read focusses on the repetitive statement(s), leaving the seemingly tidbits of research and theory to get lost. It's like having a simple base beat up too loud and dragging on throughout a whole album. They could have summed up the content of this book in 2-3 short articles with greater success. The content, however, was helpful!

I have shared the book with all my colleagues and fellows graduate students. I would highly recommend this book to any and all teachers and particularly those who teach language learners.

BACnet: The Global Standard for Building Automation and Control Networks, by Michael Newman

BACnet is a data communication protocol for building automation and control systems, developed within ASHRAE in cooperation with ANSI and the ISO. This new book, by the original developer of the BACnet standards, explains how BACnet’s protocols manage all basic building functions in a seamless, integrated way. This book explains how BACnet works with all major control systems—including those made by Honeywell, Siemens, and Johnson Controls—to manage everything from heating to ventilation to lighting to fire control and alarm systems. BACnet is used today throughout the world for commercial and institutional buildings with complex mechanical and electrical systems. Contractors, architects, building systems engineers, and facilities managers must all be cognizant of BACnet and its applications. With a real “seat at the table,” you’ll find it easier to understand the intent and use of each of the data sharing techniques, controller requirements, and opportunities for interoperability between different manufacturers’ controllers and systems. Highlights include: • A review of the history of BACnet and its essential features, including the object model, data links, network technologies, and BACnet system configurations; • Comprehensive coverage of services including object access, file access, remote device management, and BACnet-2012’s new alarm and event capabilities; • Insight into future directions for BACnet, including wireless networking, network security, the use of IPv6, extensions for lifts and escalators, and a new set of BACnet Web Services; • Extensive reference appendices for all objects and services; and • Acronyms and abbreviations

Excellent read, with all the details. A must read for those new to this field.
    By Winston Hetherington
The author, Michael Newman is considered to be the grandfather of BACnet, after many years he has kept pace with the development of his original idea. There are few who can claim such an accomplishment. The book is an easy read for anyone with an interest in automation protocols and from an unbiased source.

    Not very useful.
    By JG
I bought this book so I could understand and write code to the standard. However it does not provide much information about it. If you really want to know about the programming aspect, Buy a book on ASN.1 and the standard itself. This book would only be worth while if it was $20 or so.

The Captain’s Pet by Samantha Cayto

Book one in the Alien Slave Masters series

When a distant planet’s ownership is in dispute, conquering aliens turn defiant human males into pampered sex slaves.

In a not-too-distant future, a lopsided war has led to aliens invading and occupying an Earth settlement. Wid is a young colonist who has been caught harassing the aliens. He and his friends are rounded up and sent to an alien warship patrolling the disputed space. His fate is to serve as a sex slave for the ship’s imposing captain. Wid, at first, fights against his enslavement, but soon learns that not only does he stand no chance against the much larger and stronger captain, he isn’t sure he even wants to.

Like all Travian males, Kell is bound by duty to defend his people. Having risen to the rank of captain, he nevertheless chafes against the boring and endless patrol of the space invaded by the humans. His misses his family and constantly guards against his scheming first officer. He sees his reward of a human sex slave as more of a nuisance. Yet the pretty, fair-haired human’s exotic allure is hard to resist. He finds far more pleasure in the use of his pet than he would like.

Kept naked and leashed, Wid’s days are filled with boredom, while his nights wrapped in Kell’s arms turn from fear into pleasure. Even as the humans plot their escape, Wid and Kell form a bond and their growing affection cannot be ignored. When tensions boil over among the aliens, Wid and his friends may be Kell and his crew’s only chance for survival.

    The Alien Slave Masters series

Desperate humans fled an overcrowded Earth and believed they had found sanctuary on New World Colony 7. The Travians see them as invaders and have become reluctant occupiers of the pesky humans after a short war. When young men taunt and harass them, the Travians find a surprising use for the miscreants—they turn them into the sexual pets of their battleship officers.

Wid, Joel and Stuart are three young men who are among the first to face their fate as slaves. Not all of the Travians are happy with their gifts and the responsibility that having them brings. But there is no way to refuse. Now humans and Travians have to forge uneasy—and, for the humans, frightening—relationships. Some Travians exploit their pets, while others pamper them and find themselves lured surprisingly into love. For their part, the humans are drawn deeper into Travian culture and politics. They may be the last, best, hope for their colony’s freedom.

    The Captain's Pet
    By The Jeep Diva
After reading several full length romance novels in a row I was looking for something quick and dirty for my next read. The Captain’s Pet by Samantha Cayto worked perfectly with that in mind. This erotic futuristic sci fi takes readers to a faraway planet in that humans have fled to when Earth has reached its limits on sustaining life. Humans have attempted to colonize New World Colony Seven. The attempt is being halted by the Travian’s claiming that Barantho actually belongs to them. The Travian’s simply want the invaders to vacate their planet.

There are varying sides to how the humans and Travian’s end up together. The human young men were caught vandalizing one of the occupying forces buildings. They are captured by the Travian security force and thus punished. The High Command has gifted their soldiers with human pets. While the humans are used to punishment being handed down in a very different manner, the Travian’s cannot insult High Command by denying their gifts.

Kell and Wid are the main couple of this installment of the Alien Slave Masters series. Kell is captain of the Travian vessel. He has a certain image to uphold. The human pet that is Wid is initially seen as an inconvenience that is added to his many duties. Wid just wants to go home to his family. He soon sees that less brutality for him and the other pets is something they are all willing to quickly settle for. Not knowing how long the punishment will last the human captives band together to help each other in all ways possible. There is a strong them vs us camaraderie among the human captives.

Readers should note that this is not your typical erotic sci fi romance. Kell and Wid’s couplings go from rape, to dubious consent, to seduction for means to an end, to completely consentual. There is plenty of violence to go around for all. All of this takes them to a world specific quasi happy place. It all works together for this very specific world. While oftentimes it’s not pretty it all flows with the story being presented.

    Great story...kept me totally engrossed!
    By Sinfully
I didn't think I'd end up loving this book so much, but saying that I am a m/m Sci Fi fan...especially if it's set in deep space, on board ship, and there's an intriguingly different alien race involved. I also love slave fic so putting the two together with a provoking storyline, memorable characters (both human and alien) and some well thought out world and culture building—well, I really shouldn't be surprised at how much The Captains Pet kept me engrossed!

"This book contains sex scenes of both non-consensual and dubious consent, as well as scenes of violence, abuse and torture"

Those are the warnings given and there's no sugar coating it. Rape and abuse are uncompromisingly portrayed from the onset, but these are a race of technically advanced humanoid aliens whose culture, codes of ethics, scruples, morals, standards and ideals are so far in opposition to those of the people they're in conflict with, they just see taking these defiant, inferior beings as 'spoils of war' because of their superiority. Their prisoners are not viewed as equals, ergo they can do with them as they please without compassion, conscience or remorse; so because of that Wid and the rest of the captured boys are given (as a reward) to certain members of the crew of Kell's ship to be kept as sex slaves and pets.

More unfortunately, because of the enmity between the two races, a few of the Travian crew are even more hostile towards humans than others, and their treatment of the slaves is far more brutal and uncivilized than the rest of the crew, who still take their pleasure forcibly from their 'pets' as a matter of rote, but in a detached way, still look after the boys they've acquired. Making sure they're well fed and allowed time together daily with their fellow captives in a community room, provided for the boys on board the ship. A room that contains a pool with restorative properties to help the boys heal quicker from the rough handling they endure nightly from the huge aliens. Nothing ever condones their actions, but in an extremely twisted way, the boys have a more 'comfortable' existence than they ever lead on the ravaged planet they were taken from.

What follows isn't just a story about gratuitous hard limit sex scenes, but one that also focuses on how Wid and the rest of the boys constantly fight for survival. All the time plotting to find ways to escape their predicament and forced confinement, while learning more about the cryptic alien race who actually live in a completely different political and social system than originally thought by their adversaries.

Even though a relationship of sorts develops between Wid and Kell, the Travian Captain; because of their differing cultures and dynamics, the attachment between them never evolves into a formulaic hearts and flowers style romance. Not even when they finally go beyond the non con master/slave situation...a big part of why I loved this so much. To have gone in that direction would just have turned this into another predictable sex driven, slave/capture plot, but this also has a damned good backstory that made it an attention grabbing read that personally I couldn't put down, and in my opinion is a refreshing step up from the usual offerings.

Wid is feisty… a fighter…and the development of his and Kells 'relationship' from being totally non consensual to a tentative bond—which to me, because of Wids nature, never felt like Stockholm Syndrome—is well paced and at times surprisingly exciting. Despite Kell's initial role in the story, I reluctantly found myself slowly growing to like the alien captain and a couple of his crew members. Their unusual culture fascinating to say the least, as more information about Kell's world and its politics were fed into the story.

Did it ever excuse their treatment of Wid and the others? Absolutely not...but it gave more insight into why they acted as they did, and as insight garners more understanding, it became a vice versa situation for Kell, as the more he learned about the young prisoner, the more he also began to view Wid as something other than just a mindless sex pet who satisfied his sexual needs...the twist coming when long term, underlying unrest on the ship between Kell and his aggressively ambitious first mate and his faction, puts the boys in a position of having to make choices that, as a means of long term survival, are the last ones they expect to be acting on!

I loved how Samantha Cayto took such a harsh subject and made it readable, without ever feeling too squirmy. Her writing style is very easy and I've found everything I've read by her a very enjoyable reading experience, but this one in particular did feel like a more stand out read and is definitely my favourite up to now. I know the subject matter won't be for everyone; rape is a hard trigger. However, if like me you're a reader with no particular boundaries, I think you'll really enjoy this darkly compelling Sci Fi tale too. I was fully engaged by this novella, and knowing there are two more to come about sweet, gentle Stuart, and Wid's straight, fiery co conspirator, Joel, and their Travian masters, can't wait to get stuck into their stories!

Really good Cap/Slave NonCon that doesn't go too dark but manages to bundle the right elements together!
    By AlexJouJou
Finally - a capture/slave that is not mushy sweet with insta-love on the part of the captured. I most enjoyed here the very fallible characters. They each had misconceptions that did not magically disappear but instead shifted over time due to experience (the way most of us change!). Kell and Wid were completely engaging as a couple but, though there were romantic elements at times, this is not a romance. It's more a story of acceptance and understanding what you want, where you are, and the choices you make given those circumstances with how you want to live your life. There is rape but it's not terribly explicit and it is appropriate to the story. This is a gradient story - where things exist on a spectrum that shifts rather then black and white. It actually is very much how I would imaging things might go. Misunderstandings but an openness to change ideas rather than stay dogmatically with one thought - even if things cannot always materialize in the real world. There was give and take but also elements of fait accompli and not being able to change things even if you want them to change. The ending relationship does not end neatly with a duo - and that's appropriate because this feels more like real world. Odd that. To think a SciFi resembles more closely real world then other current day fiction stories. There you have it.

4 Stars because I wanted a bit more grit. I think there was a wee bit too much under the surface here. The emotional impact, for example, of us being able to hear or see what happened to Stuart or Wid towards the end (no spoiler) would have packed a far greater punch then just knowing. Though I really liked both characters there was still some distance for me - that gap could have been closed with the willingness to dive deeper into the (frankly) bad stuff. It might also have been drawn out with a beginning preface or opening chapter or flashback that provided more understanding of the home worlds for both MC's and a little more context there. These would be rec's for me for future stories - this is nearly there and I am eagerly looking forward to #2!

Visions of Jesus: Direct Encounters from the New Testament to Today, by Phillip H. Wiebe

Ernie Hollands, a career criminal, said Christ appeared to him in his cell in Millhaven Penitentiary. Maria Martinez saw Jesus at a busy intersection in Miami, Florida. Rose Fairs was lying in bed one morning when the Venetian blinds opened and the head of Jesus materialized before her. Were these people only imagining a figure that seemed life-like, or is there a chance that what they saw was, in some way, real?

This first critical study of contemporary visions of Jesus offers the intriguing accounts of thirty people, most of them ordinary men and women without prior or subsequent experiences of this kind, who remain mystified about their encounters. Wiebe recounts each vision in vivid detail, exploring why these individuals believe their visions were of Jesus, and why they typically believe them to be objective happenings, rather than hallucinations or dreams. He regards the occurrences from perspectives as diverse as biblical scholarship and parapsychology, concluding that they may well represent genuine religious experiences of a mystical character. The fascinating nature of these visions and Wiebe's thoughtful, evenhanded approach to each report add up to a book that will be provocative reading for skeptics and the faithful alike.

    From Library Journal
In this thought-provoking work, Wiebe (philosophy and assistant dean, arts and religious studies, Trinity Western Univ., Canada) critically studies visions of Jesus as reported in recent years. While the experience of visions has occurred since the early days of Christianity, reported by the likes of Teresa of Avila, Ignatius Loyola, Catherine of Siena, and others, and indeed are considered acceptable, modern-day instances invariably force questions of hallucinations and temporary insanity. Wiebe presents each of the 30 accounts in vivid detail, examining the often dramatic changes the apparitions brought about in the lives of mostly ordinary men and women. He goes on to discuss these experiences in light of psychology and neurology as well as from the perspectives of biblical scholarship and parapsychology. Both believers and skeptics will find much for thought in this well-researched study. The general reader will find the reading stimulating, and the informed believer or skeptic will be challenged to go further.?Leroy Hommerding, Citrus Cty. Lib. System, Beverly Hills, Fla.

    From Kirkus Reviews
Wiebe (Philosophy/Trinity Western Univ., Canada) draws on 30 contemporary visionaries and a wide range of scholarship in an attempt to produce a philosophically coherent critique of visions of Jesus. Many people claim to have experienced these visions, so that dismissing all such reports as hoaxes or hallucinations can look like prejudice. But the question remains, what sense are we to make of what the visionaries tell us? Wiebe's answer is that visions of Jesus do not exactly prove anything about the truth of Christianity or even the existence of God, but they are symbolic of a transcendent realm that is as real as that of conventional Western science. Wiebe's approach involves issues of epistemology and philosophy of religion; for example, he uses the thought of Richard Swinburne and Alvin Platinga and looks at various theories of how mind and body interact. Wiebe is also a disciple of William James and Alistair Hardy in his attitude to religious experience. Our author offers as the empirical basis of his study 30 contemporary cases of alleged visions that he has personally investigated. These include not only dreamlike encounters but also experiences shared by groups of people and even recorded on film. Not all of the visionaries were religiously active, but in spite of Wiebe's protestations of heterogeneity, most of them seem to have been influenced by an Evangelical or Pentecostalist setting. An important part of Wiebe's thesis is his controversial belief that these visions are basically the same as, and thus shed light on, those recorded in the New Testament. It is a pity that in a multidisciplinary study of religion Wiebe largely bypasses theology and the nuanced Roman Catholic and Orthodox traditions of discerning the authenticity of visions and situating them in the larger context of religious growth and practice. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Christic visions
    By Ashtar Command
"Visions of Jesus" is an attempted analysis of 30 modern visions of Jesus Christ. It also mentions medieval visions of the same type. Philip Wiebe is a Christian and probably believes in the visions at some level, but strives to be as objective as possible when discussing various explanations.

I admit that I found the book too "scholarly" and strangely boring. It also has a tendency to jump back and forth between very different subject matters (a bit like a college lecture, I suppose).

Wiebe discusses various explanations for Christic visions (his term), from frankly supernaturalist to strongly sceptical. I was struck by the fact that even Christian theologians have problems with modern visions of Jesus, and often attempt to explain them away. Thus, Karl Rahner seems to have suggested that not even "true" Christic visions are of Christ himself. Rather, angelic beings create sense-impressions of Christ in the minds of the percipients. It's not clear to me whether Rahner said this for "modernist" reasons, for reasons of Church authority, or both. (Churches sometimes have problems with free-wheeling visions or visionaries.) The silliest explanation discussed by Wiebe is psychoanalytic, and claim that visions of Jesus and Mary are...surprise...Oedipal-sexual fantasies. At the opposite side of the spectrum are charismatics, who have no problems whatsoever with supernatural appearances of Jesus. One charismatic church in Oakland claims to have taped a short movie sequence showing Jesus materializing in the congregation. Unfortunately, the original film got lost during a burglary... Wiebe has seen it, but implies that it might have shown a painting rather than a real person!

The visions of Jesus recorded in the book are of several different types, and the author admits that a Christian believer in the supernatural would be hard-pressed to explain some of them. For instance, there are visions of Jesus as a child, or visions which show scenes from his life (usually the passion). These visions don't seem to be different in kind from regular apparitions of Jesus (sometimes Jesus even interacts with the percipient), but they obviously can't be "true" in the sense of being actual meetings with Baby Jesus or the crucified Christ. According to Christian theology, Jesus has ascended to his Father in Heaven! He is no longer a child, nor is he still crucified. This sounds trivial, but note that it's connected to the historical-temporal claims of Christianity. Hindus would presumably have no particular problem with Krishna showing himself as a child for the benefit of some devotee, despite not really being a child. From a Christian perspective, meetings with Jesus as a child could be more problematical, especially if the whole thing is seen as a clever illusion created by angels. (Note also that Jesus' childhood is mentioned mostly in passing in the canonical Gospels.)

On the other hand, some other visions are of Jesus actually touching the percipient, as if he still had a physical body of some kind. These visions can't be illusions induced by angels, but they are also difficult to explain theologically: does Jesus occasionally leave the right hand of God and descend to Earth? Does he have a glorified body that one can touch? If he has, does that mean that the Second Person of the Trinity is somehow limited in space?

The author also points out the strange fact that all percipients he interviewed immediately recognized the person in their visions as Jesus, despite nobody knowing how Jesus really looked like. Often, Jesus would have a "traditional" look (beard, long hair, sandals and so on), but there were nevertheless obvious differences in detail between the various testimonies. At other times, Jesus did *not* show his face nor tell his name, but the percipient somehow knew who he was anyway.

The author is brave enough to point out that there doesn't seem to be an absolute difference between the post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus on the one hand, and the medieval or modern visions on the other. The post-Resurrection but pre-Ascension Jesus could appear and disappear at will, yet he also had a physical body and could be touched. He often appeared to several people at once, but that too has been reported in modern times. At the road to Emmaus, Jesus somehow changed his countenance, thereby keeping his identity secret. Some medieval reports are about mysterious beggars who later turn out to be Jesus. Wiebe also points out that a certain kind of ghosts have non-transparent bodies which look physical, sometimes complete with clothes!

The above could be controversial for several reasons. Some Christians are cessationists, and would presumably deny that anyone after the death of the apostles had visions of Jesus. However, modern visions are more well-documented than ancient ones, and seem to be of the same kind as the original post-Resurrection appearances. Sceptics could point to the similarities between modern visions and NT-recorded visions as evidence in favour of none of them being true. If people today can hallucinate physical meetings with Jesus, perhaps Thomas was hallucinating, as well? Finally, New Age believers could make the opposite claim: all visions of Jesus are true, but so are apparitions of dead relatives, angels, gnomes, Hindu gurus etc. (Yogananda's book "Autobiography of a Yogi" records several purported resurrections in India.)

Wiebe never reaches a firm conclusion, and as already mentioned, his book became tedious to read after a while. I admit that I didn't read literally every word of it...

Since the descriptions of the actual visions are relatively short, the book probably isn't suited for the general reader. Rather, "Visions of Jesus" belongs to the library of a theology student, or perhaps a student of comparative religion or mythology.

    Scholarly but interesting
    By unkleE
This is a scholarly book written by a Professor of Philosophy, so don't expect it to be always easy to read. But I found it worth the effort.

It starts with accounts of a number of experiences, mostly by people Wiebe interviewed himself, who say they saw Jesus in some way. Many of them were apparently healed at the same time. In a few cases, more than one person saw the "vision". Wiebe's task is to find an explanation.

He looks at three classes of explanation - supernatural explanations, natural psychological explanations, and natural neurophysiological explanations - with several different types of explanation within each class. He assumes that outright lies are unlikely in any case and impossible overall. I would have expected that some form of hallucination (which can be included under neurophysiological) could feasibly explain all cases, but he shows this isn't the case. He concludes that no single explanation can explain all cases.

Drawing on recent developments in the analysis of near death experiences, Wiebe suggests how a methodology could be developed to analyse these visions, but that many more visionary experiences need to be documented before a better understanding will be possible. He suggests that further research might lead to these experiences being seen as a more "scientific" approach to the philosophical question of the existence of God.

    Very affirming
    By Kimberly M. Benson
Stumbled onto this book at seminary while trying to make sense of some personal revelations from God. So glad the author took the time to talk to people who had similar encounters with the risen Christ.

What I enjoyed most were the stories of their experiences. The author spends a lot of time on the scientific side of things... which I suppose is valuable and gives it more credibility, but what I was truly looking for was affirmation, and I received it.

God does not always use the language of our experience to speak to us, and in this we see his creativity and sense of humor, and are reminded that his truth can be found in many faith traditions, whether they belong to us, or not.

El libro aburrido pero el servicio fue excelente
    By Jessica Soto-George

    An exciting adventure
    By A Customer
I read Mi Rincon en la Montana by Dean Graighead. I like this book because it's a historic book. A woman wants a life in the mountains. I'm reading the book in Spanish because that's my first language.
