'Educational and Enjoyable'

A well structured and well written story about a group of children, 'The Lions', who are evacuated from London during WWII to the English countryside. Roger Hurn brings to life what it is like to have to leave your family and all that you have known to go and live with strangers. With a twist in the end that offers potentially another story, Hurn shows his skills at writing for children and this book is perfect for children studying the evacuation and the Blitz at school.

Micro-cosm of WWII for children

I think this books is a really well-written look at the Blitz experience for children. But also the general human condition under pressure. Very readable and colourful strong characters for both boys and girls. One for fans of `Good Night Mr Tom'.

'Loss and Change'

Roger Hurn writes a touching story about loss and change in a WWII setting as a group of children struggle to relocate themselves after being evacuated from London during the war. With narration from all the children in the group, Hurn makes the characters well rounded and each leaves their own impression on the reader. With something to appeal to both male and female readers alike 'Once There Were Lions' is a brilliant book about home and what it means.

Even Better than Her First Chinese Cookery Book!

I enjoyed her first cookbook on Sichuan cookery, Land of Plenty, and I like this second book on Hunan cookery even more, with even more helpful beautiful photos. As far as portion sizes, she states "all recipes serve two people with one or two other dishes and rice, or four people, with 3 or 4 other dishes and rice".

The Sichuan and Hunan cuisines differ from each other as New Orleans Southern food differs from South Carolina Southern cuisine, and yet both of Dunlop's cuisines are clearly hotter and spicier "Chinese" to our tastes. Hunan folks are said to like food with chilies "fire-hot-hot" whereas Sichuan's dominant style is a mix of chili hot and the peculiar "mouth numbing", from the Sichuan "peppercorns".

The Hunan recipes in this Revolutionary Cookbook are straightforward, nearly all ingredients can be obtained from a local Chinese or Asian grocery store. The only one I can't find is "purple perilla", for which Asian basil is not quite a substitute. Not a problem.

The 120 recipe instructions are for preparing simple, straightforward "comfort food", and the food comes out tasting very good. It's lighter, and not gooey, like the cornstarch-laden Americanized Chinese food.

Delights include: Spicy steamed pork buns, BBQ'd lamb chops, Changde Clay-bowl chicken, yellow cooked salt cod in chili sauce, with most fish dishes steamed. Try Chairman Mao's red braised pork, or one of it's 7 supplied variations. I think Ms. Dunlop overdoes the Chairman Mao bit, putting his cheery face on many, many pages for no good reason; it contributes little to understanding of him, or of the Hunan cookery. I'd rather have had more beautiful photos of food and other aspects of Chinese culture and people, instead of so many of Mao's images.

Have you had the traditional Hunan dish- "General Tso's Chicken"? Guess again! FYI, She met the accepted creator of this NON-Hunan dish, with added sugar for US tastes, created in the 1970's in New York by Hunan chef Peng Chang-Kuei! And yes, most Hunanese have never tasted this bogus, yet popular dish that is known in the USA as the "quintessential Hunan dish"! To adjust for tastes, she has both a Hunan version, and a USA version of Gerneral Tso's to choose from.

From her first book being shown to a Chinese friend of mine from Chengdu,who cooked from it and proclaimed it "the real thing" I know that Ms. Dunlop's current book is gonna be just as accurate. No, I do not currently have an authentic Hunan friend to vouch for the recipes, and I do not mind, I like what spicy hot things I have cooked so far!

Just as an aside- Her photo is only somewhat kind to her, it is an oldie, and she looks better than that in person. She clearly "knows her stuff"; I recommend meeting/hearing her on her book tour.

Buy this, and buy the Sichuan book, Land of Plenty, and cook and taste authentic Chinese "comfort food" as it tastes in China... It's a lot better than the cornstarch-laden "Chinese" food served in most US restaurants.

well written, well organized book

good stuff about book: **it covers ALL the indian defenses from white's point of view, including d4,c4,Nc3, and d4,c4,Nf3 openings (no other book does this) **it is organized so that a complete repetoire against the indian defenses is included in the book (the authors did a good job of making sure the the reader will not get lost in a transposition and will not need to gather information from other sources to play the recommended lines) **it covers more than just the indian defenses. it also covers: the dutch (the recommendation is 1.d4 f5 2.Nc3), 1.d4 d6 and 1.d4 g6 (the recommendation against each is 2.e4, leading to the pirc and the modern, respectively), the budapest and fajarowich gambits (1.d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5!? 3.dxe5 Ng4 and 3. ...Ne4, the recommendation is 4.Nh3 for the budapest and 4.a3 for the fajarowich), assorted benonis (including the czech and snake benonis), the old indian defense, the englund gambit (1.d4 e5), the clarendon court (1.d4 c5 2.d5 f5), queen's fianchetto defense (1.d4 b6), and others
bad stuff about book: **it is a repetoire book so some of the lines might not be your style, but you still must play them as no other lines are provided **a lot of information and analysis is presented, which can make it hard to work through
general stuff about book: **the information is presented in game format instead of tree format (which actually why it can be hard to work through) **you must play 1.d4 and 2.c4 in order to stay within the recommended repetoire (i.e., if you play Nf3 on your first or second moves, you might reach positions not covered in this book)
this book is well worth buying if you are looking to play 1.d4. it has really helped a great deal with my chess openings.
(just a note: Burgess and Pederson also have a book in the format of this one but on the queen's gambit instead of the indian defenses, it's called The Queen's Gambit for the Attacking Player, it's worth looking into even though it is a few years old)
