From the age of eight until she was nineteen, Nikki battled anorexia nervosa—but few cases have been quite as extreme as hers. What she has been through while suffering from this illness might surprise you—it will definitely shock you. At just seven years old, Nikki began feeling that she was overweight. A remark about her being fat from a fellow pupil at a gymnastics class along with insecurity brought about by her parents' separation and he beloved grandfather's death, were the catalysts for Nikki's long-term eating disorder. Aged just eight and weighing just under three stone, she was diagnosed as anorexic. For the next eight years, Nikki was in and out of institutions—seven in total—during which time she attempted suicide twice and had to be sedated up to four times a day so that she could be force-fed. At one point, she was sedated for fourteen days while doctors sewed a tube into her stomach, through which she was fed in order to get her weight out of the critical range. Nikki admits that she knew every anorexic's trick in the book: from breaking into hospital kitchens to water down full-fat milk, altering her diet sheet and switching name tags on food to ensure that she received smaller amounts, to even stuffing a door-stop down her trousers before a weigh-in. The extremes that she went to in order to avoid eating and find ways to exercise excessively shocked doctors who have worked in the field for years. As Nikki says, “I've always wanted to be the best at everything I do, so I had to be the best anorexic—and I was.” This is the heart-rending and powerful story of a girl who lost her childhood but was brave enough to finally admit that she wanted to live again. With searing honesty, Nikki recounts her long and painful road to recovery, how she has had to come to terms with the long-term ramifications of her illness, how she coped with being in the Big Brother house and how she uses her new-found fame to promote awareness of eating disorders and to help those who are suffering from similar problems. This compelling book tells the story of an incredible journey.

About the Author
Nikki Grahame is the author of the book Fragile: The True Story of my Lifelong Battle with Anorexia.  Between eight and nineteen years old, Nikki was in and out of hospitals and institutions as she battled with anorexia nervosa. At one point, her weight was so dangerously low that she went into a coma; one of the doctors treating her said that hers was the worst case of anorexia he had seen in 32 years. Although she will never be "cured" of the illness, Nikki made the decision that she wanted to live her life again and has not looked back since. Her time as a contestant in Big Brother 7 made her a household name and, since leaving the house, Nikki has established a career in the media. She has written columns for OK!, the Sun and More magazine and has been a presenter on Big Brother spin-off BBLB. Nikki devotes a lot of her spare time to increasing awareness of eating disorders and hopes that by sharing her life story, she will help others who fall victim.

Possibly the best book I've read on Anorexia

The beginning was tough for me to get into, but that if normal of me for most books.
This book was incredibly detailed, and I must admit at times triggering.
I admire the strength of Nikki to bear her life in the hopes that it will help others struggling.
Nikki's been through hell and back and she is still fighting, it's admirable.

One of the most comprehensive stories of anorexia I have ever read

I am a previous sufferer of anorexia nervosa and this is an excellent account of one persons fight with the disorder. The story is so accurate in illustrating the total torture the anorexic mind set has on the individual. I couldn't put this book down.

Good book, very matter of fact. Nicki is the perfect example of anorexia being the "bastard child of vanity and self loathing." At times it seems as though she is proud of how sick she got. Overall good, easy read.

Great "bridge" between Firefly and Serenity

The plot of Those Left Behind was probably intended to be an early-season-2 episode of Firefly that unfortunately was never shot. As such, it features a job gone bad, an enemy from the past, and some fancy fightin' and flyin'. This, of course, translates quite well to the graphic novel medium. The illustration and dialogue are both well done and true to the series.
The true gem of this work, though, is Joss' Brief History of the Universe, Circa 2516. It explains a lot of things about his high-concept vision of Firefly and Serenity, and how the world came to be as it was. This information was never conveyed in the series explicitly, and although it was implied, it was quite nice to have it all spelled out.
I am looking forward to future Serenity graphic novels, as I, like many others, feel the show was cancelled far to soon and there are plenty of stories left to tell about these characters.

More Firefly!

Yay Firefly comics! Okay, so they’re marketed under the title Serenity, after the theatrical follow-up to the television series, but they’ll always be Firefly to me. What’s that? You’ve never watched this most excellent, most canceled of sci-fi television series? What are you still doing here then? The series is available on perpetual rotation for free via Hulu, on Netflix, or on DVD from Wal*Mart for like ten bucks. You really have no excuse not to watch it. You won’t be sorry you did….

Okay, in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past decade, Firefly was a sci-fi television series developed by the inimitable Joss Whedon and Tim Minear for Fox Television in 2002. Following a series of debacles at the studio, including the decision to air the episodes all out of order, the series was canceled after only fourteen episodes. The show’s devoted fan base was devastated, and promptly started a massive grassroots campaign to save the series. Based on the sheer enthusiasm of this fan base, Universal Pictures took the then-unheard of step of contracting a theatrical follow-up to the television series. Ever since there have been persistent rumors that the series is coming back, but for now and maybe forever the Browncoat army (as we Firefly/Serenity fans are known around the interwebs) have to content ourselves with the stellar comics Dark Horse intermittently releases.

After the Earth was used up, Humanity found itself a new home in a massive star system with hundreds of planets and moons, terraforming each until it could sustain human life. The central planets formed the Alliance and successfully subjugated the entire system, crushing the Independents in a bloody civil war. Most of the surviving Independents have drifted out to the fringes of society, out where Alliance control is nominal at best, out where a ship under your feet and a gun on your hip will give you a chance to carve out a living for yourself and those that count on you….

Those Left Behind serves as the bridge between Firefly and Serenity, helping to wrap up a few of the discarded plot threads that didn’t make the cut for the film. Here we see Mal struggling with Inara’s decision to leave, as well as the catalyst for Shepherd Book’s own departure. On a more plot-related note, witness the reappearance of Agent Dobson and the identity of those sinister Alliance agents in the blue bodysuits…. The best compliment I can offer this book is that it legitimately blends into the rest of the franchise. The dialogue, timing, and characterization is all spot-on, easing the transition between the different media. The art is incredible too, so that helps. I could say more, but really it all boils down to this: Watch the show, read this comic, then watch the film. You won’t be sorry you did.

CONTENT: Minor profanity, including a good deal of cursing in Chinese. A fair amount of violence, gory and occasionally disturbing. Mild sexual innuendo, mostly as under-the-breath commentary and asides.

Passable, but enjoyable entry in the Firefly universe

Well, I don't know what's going on here, but the overall effort, while enjoyable, was a little sub par for the people involved. I feel the plot could have been just a bit more substantive in nature... not so much the story arc, but the dialogue and some actions taken. I am purposely being vague here. The story also seemed to be just a bit short, coming to a conclusion a bit quickly.

However, for me, it is about spending time in an amazing universe.

The artwork was consistently good in quality. And I don't care that the characters didn't look precisely like the real life people. Graphic novels are difficult, and drawing likenesses in various poses without pictoral models to go by (which is far to time consuming to hunt down) is even more difficult. Some artists are better at it than others. But those artists do not necessarily want to be part of something of this nature, so making who is available a smaller pool to draw from. Think more about consistency internally to the artist's strengths than "photo-realistic" to the TV show characters.

A true fan should overlook these little things and think "big picture", about visiting a universe we all love, as I mentioned before. Isn't that really the main idea here?

I liked the book very much

The book is well written and well structured. Author tried to be as clear as possible in his exposition - every article contains an example of a mistake and its corrected version. Care is taken to track differences between British and American English. All in all, I liked the book very much. I found a few mistakes not covered though (maybe these weren't considered to be the most common).

Some good points, but not my favorite...

I found that reading "The New Articulate Executive" was a little difficult. It was written fairly dry, and I had a hard time keeping an interest - I pretty much had to make myself read it. There were a few good ideas and lessons though, mostly in the first half of the book.
One of the key takeaways was the POWER (Punch, One theme, Windows, Ear, Retention) formula: to have a strong start, have one theme in the presentation, support your theme with good examples, use conversational language in your presentation, and have a strong ending. Some ideas Toogood gave for having a strong start include beginning with the ending by giving an overview of the "big picture" in 45 seconds, telling a personal story that is related, and using humor, which is obviously very risky. When defining the outline of your presentation and theme, Toogood proposes two methods: the rocket and the necklace. The rocket uses sub-themes and examples to connect to your overall theme, while the necklace uses one theme (no sub-themes) with examples. Some ideas the author gave for having a strong ending include summarizing the key points, loop back to the beginning, and calling for action of your audience.
Toogood also mentioned some time-based tips that I felt were useful. The first of these tips was that an audience typically has an attention span of 18 minutes - he calls it the "18 minute wall." He recommends that the presenter switches gears every 18 minutes to keep the audience engaged by holding a Q&A session, showing a video clip, telling a story, etc. The second time-based tip he introduces is the "8 second rule," which states that the presenter has 8 seconds to grab the audience's attention. The last tip is the "8 second drill," which is more of an exercise in being able to bottom line your point in 8 seconds. He recommends starting at getting your bottom line down to 3 minutes, then working your way down to 8 seconds.
There are some other miscellaneous tips that Toogood gives that I thought were of interest. He suggests making graphics to scale when trying to show changes in growth or size, and simplifying charts and graphs as much as possible. I believe the latter suggestion is hard to do in my particular field because the business needs to be able to see the numbers rather than visualizing them.

A Great Book Now Even Greater

Until this book came out, it was really hard to imagine how Granville Toogood, or Granny, as he is known to his friends, colleagues and clients, could have improved on his original version of The Articulate Executive. But, now comes the NEW Articulate Executive, which IS new, interesting, sensible, insightful, and even more practical than its predecessor. It is also vintage Granville Toogood.

Here's a special tip. Skip right to page 215 and take The Articulate Executive Quiz. It's a very interesting self analysis. The quiz is your systematic roadmap to help maximize Granny's wisdom. It will also help you bring into focus your vision of yourself, how to articulate it and achieve it. Great leaders are articulate leaders. Visionary leaders can articulate their vision. Look, Act and Sound Like a Leader

The Author Granville N Toogood started with a very good point that "when you marry brains and talent with outstanding communications skills, the sky's the limit". I have to agree with the author that business people should borrow experience from politicians. Author clearly explains "Getting the message across" chapter with rocket and necklace theme and adding them to "POWER formula". The "8 second rule" and the five ways to get around the 18 minute audience attention span are valuable information. The "Powerpoint paradox" chapter got lot of valuable important information for readers who rely on PowerPoint too much. The 10 things never do, three rules; (1.)The Oreo, (2.) Get rid of those word slides, and (3.) Tell and shows are useful information.

This book is extremely helpful to everyone who wants to Look, Act, and Sound Like a Leader.

Saw it today, bought it on kindle and read it over the afternoon!

Don't recall where I saw the book cover early this morning, but I fell in love with Bob's picture and bought the Kindle edition. Downloaded it, got sucked in reading the first few pages and didn't put it down until I'd finished reading it a few hours later.

I laughed out loud and had tears running down my cheeks as I read their very touching and heart-warming story ... and I hated that the book had to end.

Thanks for sharing your stories with us, James and Bob!

Feel Good Story of Redemption

This is the best read I have had in a long time. First heard about it on TV, where they interviewed the author. It is based on a true story and I would love to see it as a movie. I had a ginger tom who died at the age of 13. He was so sweet a companion but he never did the amazing stuff this cat did. It is as though this cat was sent by God or an angel, to help this man find a sense of guidance and purpose, thus changing his life. It reveals so much about others and how they perceive the homeless and down-on-their-luck. It does much to reinforce my belief that animals are put here to make us better people, so we should be their guardians and protectors in return. Awesome book.

Wonderful, uplifting, fast read of redemption and healing; a must read.

Praise to James Bowen and Bob! I think Mr. Bowen and his editor did a fabulous job with the narrative of this book and in conveying the journey he and Bob have made together from drug addiction and living rough on the streets to a more stable and responsible existence. This book is a fine example of the healing powers of animals in giving someone without much hope something to live and strive for; to be a better person. As the quote goes, "My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog (in this case, cat) already thinks I am", so does Mr. Bowen try to become that person and succeeds very nicely. The prose is very down to earth and straight-forward and Mr. Bowen does not allow himself to be a victim and takes full responsibility for the actions which landed him on the streets. I love the theme of second chances in this book and that you've got to be able to recognize and act upon them. And obviously Bob is one uncommon cat as I've found ginger tabbies so often are, and very attached to his person, James. I hope this book changes both their lives for the better and may they have nothing but health and prosperity from this point forward.

Clear, concise, and useful!

This is a great book for anyone looking to add structure and logic to their addiction counseling practice. The book is well written and well organized. The language is easy to understand, and the concepts are useful. I particularly found the section on BSGS (Building Session Goals and Strategies) helpful. Dr. Y. takes an organized and thoughtful approach to what is often a chaotic and drama filled discipline. This a great book if you are looking to take a proactive and not reactive approach to counseling.

This book will help you learn how to interact with clients, families and co-workers in the field of substance abuse. At the end of each chapter there are helpful exercises to complete (with or without a partner) to help you get a better understanding of the topic and how to deal with a client who is at different stages of recovery or treatment. Another great feature is that it is small and light but compact with useful, professional information.

Haven't shot par yet!

Well, I am not at par yet...but this book is a tremendous help. I was doing and thinking about golf in so many wrong ways. I have dropped at least ten strokes in 15 days and looking forward to more improvement. Worth every penny so far!

It won't replace a PGA teaching pros but it will likely help shoot lower scores

Overall, I think the book is really good; having drills and a timeline are helpful. There are several drills that try to correct the most fundamental flaws of the amateur golfer (like swinging out-to-in for example). There are also several tips on what to look for if you video record your swing - video evidence is pretty tough to argue. Some of the drills are taken from other authors (Dave Pelz short game and putting bibles) which is nice because you are essentially getting an abbreviated version from those experts. I think if one completes the drills in the book the golf scores will drop. The stats that are included are really interesting about how pro golfers compare to amateur golfers.

Do I think one can build a fundamental, ground floor swing using this book? I doubt it. Can one video their swing, correct a flaw and reduce scores? Quite likely. I wish I could say that I am shooting par and that I no longer need the services of my local PGA teaching pro but I can't - it seems that some flaws (at least mine) simply evade detection without a highly trained eye.

I love this book because it really lays out a good approach to improving your game. That being said, forget about 30 days. If you pick one area of your game at a time and work through it you will improve. Just figure on about a year. Love it.
