From Publishers Weekly
This sweeping anecdotal survey of taxes through the ages aims to support the author's libertarian attacks on the current U.S. tax system and his call for a flat tax of 10% to replace the current income tax system. Tax attorney Adams ( Fight, Flight, Fraud: The Story of Taxation ) considers taxation a vital force in molding history; his discussions of civilizations ranging from that of ancient Greece to the French ancien regime are sometimes intriguing. For example, he suggests that the offer of tax immunity, rather than religious ideology, may have fueled the spread of Islam in the seventh and eighth centuries. But Adams does not engage other historians to argue his ideas, and he can be inaccurate with facts--forgetting Hugo Black, he writes that by the time of Nixon's presidency, the Supreme Court "had not had a Southerner for a hundred years." Some of his proposed reforms seem worthy--establish a crime for tax extortion, decriminalize the tax law--but others are dubious, such as the suggestion that members of Congress and federal judges be "immune" from the IRS. Moreover, his argument that low taxes were crucial to the "miracle economies" of Asia is simplistic; still more glaring is his failure to assess the impact of the Reagan administration's tax policies.

From Library Journal
Adams, a tax attorney, presents the history of taxation from ancient times to the present. He studies tax law and collection procedures in ancient Egypt, Rome, Israel, Asia, Europe, and the United States, describing how taxation played a pivotal role in such earth-shattering events as the fall of Rome, the signing of the Magna Carta, and the American Revolution. The author analyzes lessons learned through study of the past and recommends measures for possible tax reform. The selected bibliography provides an excellent guide to further research. This important, timely study is highly recommended for business and history collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
A fascinating though monochromatic libertarian history of tax policy from Babylon to Bibi Anderson, by a home-grown Will Durant of the accounting profession. Adams (a Buffalo tax attorney) explains the rise and fall of civilizations by the kinds of taxes levied and the means used to collect them. In ancient Egypt, for example, although the Pharoah's scribes taxed harvests, imports, exports, domestic sales, and slaves--everything except income, the tax on which is a modern innovation--only with tax immunity for priests and a consequent perception of tax inequity did rebellion and imperial collapse ensue. The Rosetta stone, like much of early history, is seen by Adams as a tax record. Rome fell because the egalitarian tax reforms of Emperor Julian were vitiated and finally overturned by his greedy, arbitrary successors. The Moslem hordes of the Middle Ages are seen as mild-mannered revenue agents, which explains why Islam spread so widely before the world's first excise tax unhinged its empire. Later, Enlightenment thinkers equated liberty with tax consent and defined tax freedom as a ``natural right'': The American Revolution codified that strain of thought, and Adams holds to it here as well. In his final chapters, he argues that post-WW II American tax policy replicates the errors of the Romans and the scribes--including widespread antidemocratic tax ``spying'' and taxation basically without consent--and he predicts disaster if reform isn't forthcoming. Adams will annoy liberals by not judging a tax on the merits of its use: He defines a good tax as one that's accepted by its subjects and that promotes industry and privacy. Out of step with current White House thinking, then, but making points well worth considering. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Everyone who pay taxes should read this book.
By Odysseus at home
This is one of those books that are so important that every student in the world should read it. Instead, "Capital" by K. Marx, among others, is the number one, two and three. Why? I don't know. People love the idea that the State is the solution to the problem of living. Perhaps, to a certain point, but not THE solution. The State is very expensive and inefficient. People often say, yes, but there's no alternative. In my country, this is the problem that fills the newspapers, the TV news, the radio news, the internet forums. And there's an incredible consensus: we need more taxes.

Here enters Charles Adams.

Our government in Chile decided to modify the tax structure of the country making it more heavy to us, the taxpayers. But not only that, it did it more complex, more hard to grasp and convoluted. This reformation in Chile is so big and twisted --and absurd--, that is more like a nonsense, a bad joke. And every single step of the discussion and the debate, every sympton of this social evil (when it is out of control), appears in "For Good and Evil." As long as we read the book we realize (we Chileans) that we haven't left any single sin untouched. With this reformarion, we, as a society, are guilty of every tax crime we have perpetrated.

I mean, against ourselves.

Charles Adams has written not only a highly informative book, full of insight and discussion, but also a beautiful one. He's a good writer, a very good one indeed. That's why the four hundred and eigty pages are not noticed. Sumer, Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, the Middle Ages, the Russians, up to the present, go before us telling the story of the world from the tax perspective. And believe it or not, it works.

Which means: What the author tells us is happening today as it did yesterday and it will continue as long as we live on Earth.

Troughout the ages, taxes have had several branches: the collection, the collector or taxman, the tax payer, and the control system. Our Internal Revenue Service today, which is an extension ot the oldest control systems dating back to the time of the pharaohs, is more a police system than a service. It knows everything about us. It is today as it was in Ancient Egypt or Russia. What they do to us it's happening just in front of our very eyes, and we don't notice it. We breath it without knowing that is not fresh air at all, without taking into account that it isn't based on a very solid floor: that of the morality. Yes, virtue is one thing. Discution and fixation of taxes quite another.

To make this book works as an explanation of the rise and fall of almost every empire or democracy, or their crisis and periodic hard times, Adams found in taxes the bridge that links the power of the State with the individual. Taxes are the synapses between power and individual: too much or too little of a given neurotransmitter, we feel the effects. That is the reason why taxes should be under control, that's why we need to separate the power of spent from the power of tax, that's why not to control the intrusion (as it should be) of the State in our affairs is so serious.

We made it work this way, now we have to fix it.

I don't know what will happen in the U.S., but in my country the tax system is getting bigger and bigger, from the collection of taxes up to the very control of our lives. Nobody sees, I mean, the common guy like me, that this curious monster is not going to change. Take this into account: our IRS in Chile is the most modern and advanced public "service" we have had ever. Nothing compares. It crosses and observes everything.

Adams has given us this book as a concession to the good criteria and to the moderation that Montaigne told us about in his Essays, and that have to govern our acts. He tells the history and the story, but not only that. He gives us the solutions and the alternatives we have at hand. So this book is not only about the problem, is about the way to solve it. And the way to do it passes just through our dignity as citizens. It's not a choice we have, is a mandate: we have to do something --as history teaches that people did when their rights were overruled-- when taxes give way to robbery.

My underlines are hundreds. Here is my favorite and with it I put an end to my review: "Freedom from oppresive taxation caused the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and revolts and rebellions throughout history too numerous to mention. The War of the Rebellion, as it was officially called, has at its core what has been at the core of most rebellions from our earliest historical records, taxes."

Many of the other reviews miss the point
By JF
Many of the reviews posted are so obviously biased for and against taxes or big governement as to make their review worthless.
The book has 38 chapters, nearly every one discusses taxation in a different society starting in ancient Egypt and disucsses taxation by the Greeks, Roman, Russians, French, English, and finally Americans among others. The point is not that taxation is bad, but that corrupt systems of taxation are bad and that taxation above a certain level is bound to fail since people will find ways to avoid it. This is not made up history, there are 23 pages of endnotes and a twelve page bibliography.
There are a number of illustrations, as well as, well written stories from the Rosetta Stone (it was actually a grant of tax immunity); to how Muslims taxed infidels more in order to get them to convert; to Lady Godiva (she made her ride get the King, her husband, to remit the heavy taxes he imposed on the Coventry);, to taxation as one cause of the Civil War that few are aware of (there are 16 endnotes on this chapter alone, many from articles written during the Civil War).
This is a facinating book that should be required reading for every member of Congress.

For Tax Warriors: a historical frame of reference
By Jim Hudspeth
This book is a "must read" for anyone who is serious about understanding the history of economics and taxation, regardless of point of view. If you are a libertarian you will enjoy it - and learn a lot. If you are a tax and spend liberal, you will probably just learn a lot.

From Publishers Weekly
A mixture of visionary progressivism and repugnant racism, Abraham Lincoln's attitude toward slavery is the most troubling aspect of his public life, one that gets a probing assessment in this study. Columbia historian and Bancroft Prize winner Foner (Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men) traces the complexities of Lincoln's evolving ideas about slavery and African-Americans: while he detested slavery, he also publicly rejected political and social equality for blacks, dragged his feet (critics charged) on emancipating slaves and accepting black recruits into the Union army, and floated schemes for colonizing freedmen overseas almost to war's end. Foner situates this record within a lucid, nuanced discussion of the era's turbulent racial politics; in his account Lincoln is a canny operator, cautiously navigating the racist attitudes of Northern whites, prodded--and sometimes willing to be prodded--by abolitionists and racial egalitarians pressing faster reforms. But as Foner tells it, Lincoln also embodies a society-wide transformation in consciousness, as the war's upheavals and the dynamic new roles played by African-Americans made previously unthinkable claims of freedom and equality seem inevitable. Lincoln is no paragon in Foner's searching portrait, but something more essential--a politician with an open mind and a restless conscience. 16 pages of illus., 3 maps.

Review
Do we need yet another book on Lincoln?... Well, yes, we do if the book is by so richly informed a commentator as Eric Foner. Foner tackles what would seem to be an obvious topic, Lincoln and slavery, and manages to cast new light on it.... Because of his broad-ranging knowledge of the 19th century, Foner is able to provide the most thorough and judicious account of Lincoln's attitudes toward slavery that we have.--David S. Reynolds

Starred Review. Original and compelling .In the vast library on Lincoln, Foner s book stands out as the most sensible and sensitive reading of Lincoln s lifetime involvement with slavery and the most insightful assessment of Lincoln s and indeed America s imperative to move toward freedom lest it be lost. An essential work for all Americans. "

Moving and rewarding. . . . A master historian at work. --David W. Blight"

No one else has written about [Lincoln's] trajectory of change with such balance, fairness, depth of analysis, and lucid precision of language. --James M. McPherson"

Do we need another book on Lincoln? Yes, we do if the book is by so richly informed a commentator as Eric Foner. --David S. Reynolds"

While many thousands of books deal with Lincoln and slavery, Eric Foner has written the definitive account of this crucial subject, illuminating in a highly original and profound way the interactions of race, slavery, public opinion, politics, and Lincoln's own character that led to the wholly improbable uncompensated emancipation of some four million slaves. Even seasoned historians will acquire fresh and new perspectives from reading The Fiery Trial. --David Brion Davis, author of Inhuman Bondage: The Rise and Fall of Slavery in the New World"

This volume stands alone in the field. It is not only the best account ever written on the subject; henceforth, it should be regarded as the only account." --Harold Holzer, author of Lincoln President-Elect "Eric Foner has done it again. The Fiery Trial explores the pivotal subject of Lincoln and slavery free from the mists of hagiography and the muck of denigration. An in-depth examination of the great question facing a great man
By Bruce Trinque
Eric Foner's "The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery" is the finst study I have ever seen of Lincoln and the central question that America faced in the middle of the 19th century: what to do about slavery? Foner's book traces in great detail Lincoln's evolving public responses on what to do about slavery (and rce) from the 1830s until the eve of his death in 1865. And I do specify "public responses" because in private Lincoln played his cards very close to the vest, and it is extremely difficult to determine exactly how far his true inner feelings varied at any particular time from what he said or wrote for public knowledge. Obviously, his opinions modified with time; the Lincoln of April, 1865, was not wholly the same man as the Lincoln of mid-1861, just as that man differed from the Lincoln of 1860 or 1858 or 1854. The line between consciously forming and leading public opinion on the subject versus being led by external events is not readily discerned in every case, but Foner does as thorough a job of analysis as we are ever likely to see.

"The Fiery Trial" demands close attention, as the narrative thread winds and twists among the myriad complex issues presented by slavery and its attendent racism. In the end, the story does become one of change, how one extraordinary man traveled from the ordinary deep, casual racism of the time and place of his birth to a position that impelled him in the end to embrace a notion of equality that not only forbade slavery but demanded even-handed treatment before the law and even expanded to include that simple justice required extension of the right to vote. It was a long journey, and Lincoln was neither the perfect saint of later myth, nor the racist demon featured in so much recent revisionist history, but instead was a complex, real man who grew in stature to meet the greatest challenge of his era.

Invaluable and Insightful
By JMB1014
Eric Foner is a great American historian. His book on Reconstruction remains the standard and definitive work. This volume is the definitive study of Lincoln's evolving attitude toward slavery.

Foner sets out the story in chronological order. He strikes a fine balance between the competing demands of completeness and concision and does so with both sound scholarship and narrative flair. To say this book reads well is an understatement.

Of course we read that Lincoln grew up in border areas and had limited and somewhat ambivalent dealings with blacks. He talked about blacks in language that makes us cringe. He could be patronizing and yet he was increasingly aware. And his initial stance on slavery, which originally owed much to his "beau ideal," Henry Clay, seems in retrospect hopelessly naive. For many years, he favored a combination of gradual emancipation rather than outright abolition, compensation of slave-owners, and colonization of slaves in another nation rather than integration here. Bizarre as colonization seems to us now, among opponents of slavery it was for decades considered the only realistic option once slaves were emancipated. Even in the North, it was all but unthinkable that blacks could be integrated and enjoy social, legal and political equality.

It is widely understood that Lincoln's attitude toward blacks and slavery evolved, as did his insight into how to govern a divided nation in the midst of a war that almost daily threatened to arrive at his very doorstep. No president has ever had to respond so quickly to such immense domestic crises or to maintain his footing as he tried to win a war, keep states in the union, maintain the long view with respect to eventual reunification, preserve relations with foreign powers, contend with a nest of rivals in his own cabinet, address military advances and concomitant political changes, and through it all, develop a nuanced and principled position on slavery and the role of black people in society as well as in the Union army.

Lincoln could be startlingly candid. One of the most famous instances of his candor is the observation that he had not controlled events: events had controlled him. But his responses to the constantly shifting course of events and to the manifold ramifications of every development were almost unerring. We who already know the script may be inclined to discount how tricky and complex this process was for Lincoln. But Foner will not let us be complacent. Revealing how deftly Lincoln met each change of circumstance, and not merely explaining Lincoln's evolving perspective on slavery, is the real contribution of Foner's superb volume.

As the war progressed, it became clear to those who saw slavery up close for the first time that it was far more abhorrent than they had ever imagined. And as slaves rushed to Union lines, Union commanders often improvised to find ways to deal with their arrival and their status. For an agonizingly long time, Lincoln officially supported the laws that permitted slavery. At least in the earlier phases of the war, he revoked unauthorized actions taken by his subordinates against slavery, as when he relieved John C. Fremont of duty for ostentatiously ordering that slaves in Missouri be freed. But increasingly Lincoln also looked the other way when his officers assisted slaves who had fled their masters and appeared at Union army camps seeking sanctuary. General Benjamin Butler, a mediocre general but a shrewd lawyer, solved the problem neatly by declaring that such slaves were "contraband." While the term seems demeaning, it was adopted with delight by those whose freedom it protected.

Among northern opponents of slavery, Lincoln was often regarded as dithering. They even tried to nominate Fremont to oppose him in 1864. Nevertheless, events ultimately worked in Lincoln's favor. He succeeded in keeping border states in the union. And the success of federal arms in reasserting control over contested land and the eventual recognition that the army needed black soldiers (together with the courage and valor black troops displayed in combat) did much to convince Lincoln and other Americans that slavery was simply going to be ended without the need to compensate slave-owners, that blacks deserved their freedom, and that they truly wanted to remain in the United States, as it was their home. Gradualism, compensation, and colonization thus became "a creed outworn."

The North's military momentum gave reconstruction a highly progressive cast early on. As Union victory became inevitable, the permanently altered view of blacks and slavery made it plain that no state could be reunited unless it abandoned slavery. Moreover, some of the southern and border states that were adopting new governments not only embraced emancipation but also public education, minimum wages on federal projects, a progressive income tax, and the end of debtors' prisons. From the ashes of slavery arose nascent progressivism.

It is one of the great tragedies of history that this pragmatic yet principled president was murdered just as the war ended, since his approach to reconstruction would certainly have been far more intelligent and competent than that of his singularly inept and rebarbative successor. Lincoln knew there were profound challenges ahead, but in the few days he lived following Lee's surrender, he knew the adulation of black people whose freedom he had won and even enjoyed a few moments of real happiness. His generous spirit emerges in the account of how he asked that a band in a crowd outside the White House play "Dixie" because he felt it was one of our best tunes, and the North had captured it fairly.

Many histories of the Civil War are compelling reading. But the account of Lincoln's development in this crucial area is an amazing one and demands not only our admiration of this remarkable man, but also of the historian who has so keenly perceived and superbly told his true story.

a classic book on Lincoln and required reading
By James W. Durney
We see Abraham Lincoln as "The Great Emancipator", who ended slavery in the United States of America. Lincoln's words describe and inspire us, remaining as current as the day they were spoke. We see Lincoln not as the man but as the larger than life occupant of the Lincoln Memorial. Lincoln's 1860 nomination is not because he is or is thought to be "The Great Emancipator". Lincoln is a moderate on slavery and race, acceptable to both wings of the party.
Abraham Lincoln's and Americans journey to emancipation is the subject of this excellent book. America faces serious divisions over slavery but very few over race. The wish to end slavery often did not include what to do with the former slaves. Northern states, with few slaves, accepted gradual emancipation and managed to tolerate their Black population. In the majority of Northern states Blacks could not vote, could not serve on a jury nor could they testify against a White person. Some Northern states essentially ban Blacks. In many more states, they are under server restrictions and required to post bonds to insure good conduct. Garrison said that Illinois is essentially a "slave state" due to the restrictive laws on Blacks.
This is a book about race relations more than about slavery. The majority agreed that slavery is "bad" but cannot see a reasonable exit. Gradual Emancipation is an acceptable answer. Slaves born after a set date become free when they become n years old. The current slaves either remain slaves or become free after n years. This pushes the race problem away, leaving it for another generation to deal with. Immediate Emancipation ends slavery but has few answers to the race question. Colonization is a popular answer. Questions on transporting four million people to Africa or some other location is not answered. Nor is the question of how many Blacks voluntary will leave the United States.
Black rights are the major problem. To avoid full citizenship, "rights" are subdivided into acceptable and unacceptable units. Natural rights, not being enslaved, being allowed to seek work and being secure in your person are acceptable because they enshrined in The Declaration of Independence. Political rights, being able to vote, serve on a jury or testify in court are questionable. The majority of Northern States say no to these rights. A few liberals accept "more intelligent Negros" as possible candidates for political rights. Social rights, being able to mix with whites as equals are not considered. Lincoln spends a good deal of his time answering Democratic attacks in this area.
This is a history of Lincoln's journey from Whig to Republican, from gradual to immediate emancipation from colonization to political rights. America move along with Lincoln, one sometimes ahead of the other but both leading and encouraging the other. It is not an easy journey nor is it a quick one.
Eric Foner is an excellent author and historian. This well-written book is informative and easy read. Forner is careful to maintain a balanced approach and never descends into bashing, Lincoln, America or the South. This should be a classic book on Lincoln and required reading.

Not very good
By Jenny
We love Winnie the Pooh but neither me nor the kids enjoyed this book. The story about the two rival kings didn't seem well written. The kids complained it was "weird." We gave up halfway through. And I didn't like it anyway.

Pleasant
By Albin Dittli
I liked the light hearted little story, and fact that it was free added to the charm. A A Milne wrote more that he ought to be famous for than just the Pooh bear stories.

Wonderful Fantasy book to read to yourself or aloud
By Oriana Michellen
This book is a wonderful story about a king, princess and an "evil" countess. The king, King Merriwig of Euralia, is in love with the Countess Belvane. Belvane has her sights set on becoming queen of Euralia. However, Princess Hyacinth is suspicious of how the countess acts. So the Princess enlists the help of Prince Udo from Araby. When Belvane finds out, she wishes for something humorous to happen to the prince on his journey - and it does! Now, Hyacinth must stop Belvane, help the prince all while keeping him from falling in love with the countess!

A. A. Milne has done it again with this story of pure fantasy. He did not write this book for children, as he states in his introduction, yet it is fun and exciting for all ages. If you need a great bedtime story, check this book out. Would you care for some light reading? "Once On A Time" is the book for you. I recommend this book with a happy heart and hope you will feel the same way too!

Poor Quality Photos
By AComment
Appears to be a collection of images grabbed randomly off the internet, cropped so only the genitals are showing, and then thrown together in print format. Most images are grainy and have very poor color. A very few of the photos are of pretty good quality showing that the on-demand printer used, Createspace, is capable of reasonable photo printing if given a decent image to print.

Spend an hour on the 'net and you'll find a collection of photos of much better quality.

Low Res Photos
By M Couto
It is hard to understand how someone who calls himself a photografer agree to print his work with so poor quality... Some ideas are good, but run away from this book. I bought three of the same kind (Douglas O'Brian and Keyser B Soze) and the three have the same problem. Run away. If I was not from other country, I should ask for a refund.

I dont read a lot of books, but... well the picture ones are easier!
By Jaizon Zolla
Any red blooded male will like this content... but I did notice it is similar to his other close-up book, and agree that you just need one of them. Ironically, his "Every Square Inch" book might actually be MORE graphic than this one. The Every Square Inch book also has full page pictures which are bigger, but I like the variety in this one.

Demonomics: Satan's Economy and Your Future, by Terry James

This is the book that will help the reader understand the tumultuous monetary madness that holds captive every person on planet earth. America and the world are being rushed headlong into uncharted socioeconomic waters. Unprecedented, tsunami-like fiscal pressures gush at sovereign national currency structures, the flood bulldozing everything in its path toward a totally changed order of some sort.
No matter how the turbulence is examined, dissected, and/or analyzed, the ultimate destination at which the carnage is likely to arrive looks ominous from the perspectives of the authors of this book.
There is a force generating and pushing the tidal wave, some diabolist energy that manipulates and maneuvers behind the stage of history upon which mankind acts and reacts. We call this force “demonomics” in this book for the purpose of giving that force a face—a face behind which lurks an evil intention to bring all peoples of earth under absolute control.
It is an ancient evil that more often than not throughout the ages has acted insidiously rather than overtly. Its modus operandi of late, however, manifests aggression unlike at any time in man’s history.
The evil has always been with mankind. Now, however, this force is using heretofore unmatched methodology in exerting its determination to achieve a new world order.
The authors of Demonomics go behind the mask that is the face of the ancient evil. Each contributor expertly removes layer after layer from the deceptive façade presented by the malevolence.

Very Timely and Informative. Highly Recommended!
By Arkansas Traveler
Terry James has given us another very informative and thought provoking book from a Christian and Biblical perspective that is as current as the headline in our morning newspaper. While our anchor and hope in this life must always lie in our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, in order to be good stewards of the "talents" that we have been entrusted with, we need to have some understanding of the Satanic world system we find ourselves living in. One of the most complicated and difficult to understand elements of this system is economics and the role of money. Using the knowledge and economic expertise of a number of Christian authors, Terry has sought to "pull back the curtain" in order to expose the greed driven manipulation employed by financial cabals, bankers, and wall street barons who pluck the financial and economic strings of the world monetary system exclusively to their tune. To call them robber barons would be putting it mildly. The essays contained in the book provide both a Biblical perspective on the ownership and use of money and a necessarily simplified description of the history and inner workings of various elements of the present US and world financial and economic system for those of us who are relative novices on the subject. These articles also bring into focus the Satanically driven financial and economic manipulation of the world economic systems for the benefit of the super rich in light of Bible prophecy on the subject. Clearly, a one-world monetary and financial system is the goal toward which we are being herded by the masters of demonomics, which is surely a sign that the Lord's return is drawing near. Read the book and you will see what I mean.

Concise Conspiracy Education
By Tobin B. Crenshaw
This book was very interesting. It covers conspiracies and history, including banks and bailouts and funding for wars. It looks at history over the past few hundred years and how the wealthy have controlled the banking industry at the expense of the less fortunate. Fascinating discussion on the wealth made from war.

On Inequality, by Harry G. Frankfurt

Economic inequality is one of the most divisive issues of our time. Yet few would argue that inequality is a greater evil than poverty. The poor suffer because they don't have enough, not because others have more, and some have far too much. So why do many people appear to be more distressed by the rich than by the poor?

In this provocative book, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of On Bullshit presents a compelling and unsettling response to those who believe that the goal of social justice should be economic equality or less inequality. Harry Frankfurt, one of the most influential moral philosophers in the world, argues that we are morally obligated to eliminate poverty--not achieve equality or reduce inequality. Our focus should be on making sure everyone has a sufficient amount to live a decent life. To focus instead on inequality is distracting and alienating.

At the same time, Frankfurt argues that the conjunction of vast wealth and poverty is offensive. If we dedicate ourselves to making sure everyone has enough, we may reduce inequality as a side effect. But it's essential to see that the ultimate goal of justice is to end poverty, not inequality.

A serious challenge to cherished beliefs on both the political left and right, On Inequality promises to have a profound impact on one of the great debates of our time.

Review
"Frankfurt has issued a clear challenge to the champions of equality."--Julian Baggini, Financial Times

"Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is doing well, if not good, by reducing the debate about equality to resentment of large fortunes. He should read Harry G. Frankfurt's new book On Inequality. It is so short (89 pages) that even a peripatetic candidate can read it, and so lucid that he cannot miss its inconvenient point."--George Will

"The volume should be required reading for candidates of both parties."--Stephen L. Carter, NY Post

"With this book, as in his past work, Frankfurt has shown why it is so important to question common terms that are too often used reflexively. Regardless of one's own views on the past, present, and future of inequality, On Inequality is a salutary effort to help readers pause and think about the beliefs that motivate our rhetoric."--EF, Econ Focus

"On Inequality may unsettle those fuzzy-minded liberals who know they are committed to a more equal society but are not sure why. Given Frankfurt's convincing proof that bourgeois, academic ethics cannot sustain a critique of inequality, these liberals may find themselves turning to intellectual traditions that offer a more radical, systemic critique."--Los Angeles Review of Books

"The best discussion of the moral aspects of income inequality that I have read recently."--New Boston Post

"Harry Frankfurt has once again shown himself to be a sensitive, humane and highly original philosopher. Anyone who is disturbed by the rise of inequality should grapple with what he has to say about why it is troubling. They will learn a great deal by doing so even if, in the end, they do not find his arguments persuasive."--Paul Weithman, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

From the Back Cover

"Economic equality is one of today's most overrated ideas, and Harry G. Frankfurt's highly compelling book explains exactly why."--Tyler Cowen, author of Average Is Over

"Relevant, persuasive, and a pleasure to read, this is the sort of philosophy that ought to be more widely available."--Gideon A. Rosen, Princeton University

"Many people who worry about inequality will want to read this wonderful book and will be profoundly influenced by Frankfurt's clear and forceful arguments. In part, he argues that if we are preoccupied with equality rather than with alleviating poverty we will be estranged from our own lives. That insight alone is worth the price of the book."--Richard Robb, Columbia University

"Social justice issues are at the forefront again today, and it's important that we get the goals right. Frankfurt is not alone in arguing that equality is beside the point. But his important book, infused with characteristic insightfulness, is written in such a way that those who need to hear the message might actually listen."--Jason Brennan, Georgetown University

About the Author
Harry G. Frankfurt is professor emeritus of philosophy at Princeton University. His books include the #1 New York Times bestseller On Bullshit and The Reasons of Love (both Princeton).

By They'reTheMessWe'reIn
This is an exceptionally readable book and coherent argument explaining why so much of today's equality/inequality debate is beside the point. My one criticism is its lack of discussion and references addressing the psychology of relative deprivation (how extrinsic considerations in Franfurt's terminology nonetheless become very much intrinsic to one's self-worth).

Pithy and blunt; argument could have been expanded
By MT57
This is a really short book, less than 100 pages, which pages are not even full-size to begin with. I read it on a flight from Miami to New York and still had time to do the "hard" Sudoku puzzle in the airline magazine.

But it is well worth reading. Simply stated, the author,a professor of philosophy at Princeton who previously wrote a popular book called "On Bullsh*t" bluntly rejects the pursuit of economic equality as a morally valid goal. He characterizes such a pursuit as "alienating" a person from his or her own self, by defining said person by reference to what others have or lack. Using economic equality to define a person's moral status means that if one has more income or wealth than others, one should feel guilt, and if one has less, one should feel victimized. This means that people can not be satisfied or happy based on their personal assessment of their own lives and that is why he defines the economic equality frame as "alienating". For some reason I don't quite understand, he eschews use of words like "envy", "jealousy" or "covetousness" to describe that state of mind.

He also discusses attempts to justify economic equality based on the theory of "diminishing marginal utility" which postulates that the marginal value of an additional dollar to a person who is already well off is less than to a person who has substantial needs. First, he notes, that such an argument is really an argument for a basic level of sufficiency, not ultimate equality. Once both persons have a sufficient amount, and what is being compared is two persons' desire to purchase a discretionary item, the proposition is not credible. The marginal utility of moving from an income level that uses frequent flyer to upgrade to first class to the income level that uses private jets may be huge, because it enables one to bypass the TSA nightmare and spares one unnecessarily long waits in airports.

In the same vein, he disputes the measurability and comparability of marginal utilities ab initio. He astutely offers the example of series of things -- products, services and content. Think about collecting (e.g., comic books, baseball cards, first editions). Or watching a TV series, such as Breaking Bad or the Sopranos: how important was it to see the last episode vs one in the middle? Or the greater value of attending the championship game at the end of a season. In each case, the last purchase or experience in the series can be the most desired, not the least valued. Life can't be reduced to simple formulas with linear slopes. Merely because marginal utility can be observed in hindsight or across a population as a whole does not mean it can be predicted with accuracy as regards the future or any given individual. See "ecological fallacy".

There is also the fact, not raised by the author, of differing life cycles of consumption, work and leisure. One person may work extra hard in high school, college, and his or her prime working years, and may save aggressively. with the goal of consolidating a large block of leisure and savings in retirement. Another person may elect to enjoy a more dispersed leisure throughout those earlier periods and find himself or herself working later in life to make up for it. Think of the famous marshmallow experiment. But how does one justly define, at any point along the timelines of these two lives, what is "equality" between them?

The two most significant lines of criticism of the "equality" imperative that are missing from this book are the impact on child-rearing and the failure to account for disparities in work and productivity.

Regarding child-rearing, a world of perfect equality dis-incentivizes parents from investing extra time or resources in their children, given that any fruits of above-average development of the child will not be retained by the child, let alone benefit the parents indirectly, but instead disseminated among the population to maintain equality. So why expend extra effort?

Regarding work, a demand for outcome equality in a world where people have unequal inputs of talent and work ethic, are unequally clever and productive, and make decisions of unequal merit and wisdom, merely substitutes one form of inequality for another, disparately coercing the best workers, the most productive, the most in demand, dramatically more than the least, unwisely alienating those who make the greatest contribution to the society and invariably incentivizing those in the middle to work less and under-develop their productivity in reliance on the prospect of receiving transfers of the surplus generated by the most productive. In Lincoln's famous remark, "It is the eternal struggle between these two principles -- right and wrong -- throughout the world. They are the two principles that have stood face to face from the beginning of time, and will ever continue to struggle. The one is the common right of humanity and the other the divine right of kings. It is the same principle in whatever shape it develops itself. It is the same spirit that says, "You work and toil and earn bread, and I'll eat it.". To achieve perfect equality among a population with different talents and efforts requires the extermination of that population's freedom to act in ways that generate unequal outcomes. Thus, the only place where there is perfect economic equality is a cemetery.

Last, the contingency of the "equality" demand should be remarked upon. It is, with rare exceptions, not proposed on a global basis, among all people, as one would expect a moral principle, such as "thou shalt not kill" to be laid out. It is analyzed and demanded, state-by-state, and is thus contingent on borders. Scandinavian nations are "good" and "more just" because they have less inequality among their population than the US, which is "mean" and "unjust" because it has greater inequality among its population. That the Scandinavian nations are highly unequal compared to sub-saharan Africa is somehow not considered of great relevance to moral inquiry. That the US has many more immigrants and first-generation residents is rarely considered. It is tremendously incoherent that the proponents of "equality" accord borders, which are artifices of humans and thus malleable, as givens that frame their moral analysis, while more fundamental and natural facts, such as differences in talents and effort, are disregarded entirely. The demand for "equality" should be recognized not as a moral demand but a political one, when it is confined to the outcomes of the population within a given polity.

I Agree with his Alternative
By Herbert Gintis
Harry Frankfurt's chief attractions are his clear arguments and his short, easy to read books. His On Bullshit was welcome because there is indeed so much long-winded bullshit in professional philosophy and social theory journals and books. People who have virtually noting new to say find ways to say it with big words, in in my territory, tons of equations and esoteric references.

In this book, Frankfurt argues that egalitarianism, by which he means favoring equal distribution of wealth and income, is not a moral ideal. By that he means that there is no reason to favor more equal over less equal on principle, although there may be moral effects of inequality that are undesirable. What is morally important, he argues, is that people have enough of what they need to live a decent life. If that requires some form of distributional equity, so be it. He also argues that excessive consumption by the well off, in the face of the destitution of the poor, is a form of gluttony that is disgusting and offensive. The rich should not act that way. But that does not imply that equality, or even a move towards equality, it a moral good in and of itself.
I quite agree with this argument. Perhaps more important, I believe that at least in my society (the USA), almost everyone agrees that inequality is not a moral evil, although many do not agree, as Frankfurt and argue, that poverty is a moral evil. I believe it is inherently unfair that a child born in one family have a much greater chance at a decent life than a child born in another family. I do not believe that this is completely remedial as long as children are raised in families and families are heterogeneous in their capacity to raise their children properly.
But Frankfurt never talks about equality of opportunity, and he does not make the above argument.
Indeed, Frankfurt does not make any argument for his views, but rather critiques those who have tried to defend egalitarianism. His critiques are not new, and I found some of them rather perfunctory and incomplete.
John Rawls' principles of justice are considerably better developed that Frankfurt's, and they place equal emphasis on the injustice of poverty. But they are in essence extremely egalitarian morally, although Rawls recognizes that much inequality is implied by his maximin principle. I do not much like Rawls arguments. In this I am in agreement with many who argue that Rawls is analytically weak.
Like a true philosopher, Frankfurt does not deal with the behavioral science that attempts to deal with how real people construct a social morality for themselves. If he did, I suspect he would have a much stronger argument.
