Can a justice system that doesn’t protect the poor be considered truly just? We have all heard the phrase, “You have the right to an attorney.” But did you know this is only true for those being accused of a crime in our country, not their victims? Without a legal advocate, innocent victims are left to fend for themselves.

The church is called to do justice and love mercy. We are given the example of the Good Samaritan serving a victim in need, no matter the stigmas attached. But how are we to do this amidst the complexities of the current system?

Bruce Strom left a successful legal career to start Administer Justice, a nonprofit organization providing free legal care to our most vulnerable neighbors. Gospel Justice calls churches across the nation to transform lives by serving both the spiritual and legal needs of the poor through participation in the Gospel Justice Initiative. It is not only a book for lawyers or pastors, though. Bruce Strom is calling each of us, the whole body of Christ, to join the cause of legal justice for the oppressed.

Review

“This book combines the clear biblical teaching about justice with practical insights and examples as to how it should be applied. Don’t read it unless you are willing to be convicted and motivated toward practical action.”

Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer, senior pastor, The Moody Church

“As Christians we are all called ‘to loose the chains of injustice . . . to set the oppressed free.’ By stepping away from a lucrative career to fight the oppression of the poor, Bruce Strom gives an inspiring example for fulfilling this call.”

Rich Stearns, president, World Vision US and author of Unfinished and The Hole in Our Gospel

"Wonderful. The stories will make you cry. The biblical material will challenge your mind. The stories of success will thrill your heart. And the combination of evangelism and social justice is fabulous. An inspiring book that nurtures hope and action."
Ronald J. Sider, founder, Evangelicals for Social Action, Professor of Theology, Holistic Ministry &
Public Policy at Palmer Seminary at Eastern University

“Justice is much more than a trend: it is a timeless value that is central to the biblical story and close to the heart of God. Bruce Strom has been a pioneer in challenging the church in the United States to seek justice for the vulnerable in our society, and Gospel Justice includes both a much-needed theological framework for thinking about justice as well as practical examples of how that plays out in real people’s lives.”

Matthew Soerens, US Church Training Specialist, World Relief, author of Welcoming the Stranger

“This book will stir your soul and prompt you to seriously consider what Jesus' words, ‘Go and do likewise,’ mean for you personally andpractically. Bruce Strom intertwines moving stories of real people in crisis with scriptural truths, producing a compelling call to action that no reader will easily ignore.”

Carol Thompson, Executive Vice President, Christianity Today

“Justice lies at the very heart of the gospel. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus fully satisfied the conditions of God’s justice. Now He is calling us to spread the precious gift of God’s justice into every sphere of life. Gospel Justice beautifully proclaims this call to action. Read it . . . and then take up its challenge.”

Ken Sande, founder of Peacemaker Ministries and Relational Wisdom 360, author The Peacemaker

“Gospel Justice is a dynamic, new response to God’s call and mandate to each of us to provide justice for all. Based on biblical justice, Bruce exposes the enormous unmet needs of the underprivileged through his careful and scholarly research of the Good Samaritan story. Bruce demonstrates how God’s commands are addressed to the entire body of Christ, requiring each of us to participate much more intensely in achieving justice on behalf of the poor. Bruce calls us to act through Gospel Justice Initiative, a ministry founded on God’s heart for truth and righteousness. The book will cause you to reexamine your own heart for justice, inspiring you with real examples of lives being extraordinarily changed through the mercy and compassion of ordinary people responding to God’s command to serve the least of these.”

John D. Robb, board chair, Gospel Justice Initiative, former National Chairman of the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants

“Gospel Justice is a must-read for lawyers and non-lawyers alike. One of the most practical books you’ll read on many levels—from an extraordinary theological study of the Good Samaritan parable to the nuts and bolts approach that any church, law firm, or even solo practitioner can take to rolling up your sleeves and doing justice for the poor and needy. This is a book that will enlighten, encourage and equip you to better understand—and act on—God’s heart for justice. I plan to add Gospel Justice to my own toolkit to encourage advocates around the globe who are Doing Justice with Compassion.”

Brent McBurney, president and CEO, Advocates International

“Bruce Strom has performed a great service to the church through this timely and prophetic word. Gospel Justice is both challenging and encouraging. Built around a series of penetrating reflections on Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan and the front lines work of his organization, Administer Justice, it builds an incontrovertible case for believers to pursue justice for those who are most at risk. Grounded in the nature of God and the call of Jesus Christ, this book is deeply Scriptural and very practical. While primarily focusing on the relationship of justice and law and on the crucial role of legal advocates and legal organizations to serve the poor and oppressed, this book has applications in other areas of the pursuit of justice as well. Widely accessible and deeply motivating, Bruce Strom's book echoes the clarion call of Jesus for His followers to be like the Good Samaritan —‘Go and do likewise.’ ”

Steven C. Roy, associate professor of Pastoral Theology, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

“Bruce Strom aptly points out that most Christians miss the overwhelming biblical call to bring justice to the poor. Bruce’s life and message, as reflected throughout Gospel Justice, are the truest examples of godly justice and helping those in need. He draws out the lessons from the parable of the Good Samaritan and challenges the reader to apply them to our neighborhoods and our neighbors. The world needs more people like Bruce Strom, and more Christians need to catch this biblical vision of justice for the poor and needy.”

David Nammo, executive director and CEO, Christian Legal Society

I should have gone to law school
By Paul Mastin
I have read a lot about justice, social justice, justice for the poor, all in the context of Christian ministry to the poor and marginalized. I suspect I am not alone in missing what Bruce Strom makes obvious in his new book Gospel Justice: Joining Together to Provide Help and Hope for Those Oppressed by Legal Injustice. Justice, a "vital part of any holistic ministry . . . cannot be separated from law and lawyers."

Many commentators have observed that the church in the U.S., especially among younger Christians, seems to be waking up to social issues such as poverty, human trafficking, unfair labor practices, housing issues, and other areas. But rarely do I here people noting, as Strom does, that the roots of these problems often have to do with a lack of legal representation, and that the solutions will frequently come from legal action.

Strom had achieved a high level of success in the legal profession when God opened his eyes to "how self-focused I was, and He helped me see the needs of others in pain around me." He began to see that many of the problems of the poor cry out for legal solutions, so he began what would become Administer Justice, a group of volunteer lawyers who assist people in need with legal matters of all kinds.

Gospel Justice is full of stories of people whose lives were changed with the help of the compassionate, knowledgable assistance of the Administer Justice staff. It's shocking to realize how many people suffer in ways that could be prevented or remedied if they had legal representation. This is not a theological treatise or law review article, but Strom brings in enough theology and legal knowledge to give the reader ample inspiration to use one's legal skills to help the poor, to apply to law school, or at least to seek out a legal group to volunteer with or donate to.

We have seen medical missionaries for generations. Bible translators, church planters, and evangelists all fit nicely into our picture of what a missionary looks like. We are familiar with service to the poor: soup kitchens and food banks, homeless shelters, and clothing ministries are commonplace. Strom has presented a new picture, at least new to me, of one way to be a missionary, one way to serve the poor. Providing legal services for the poor and marginalized goes beyond what traditional ministry among the poor has done by creating opportunities to address structural issues and root causes. Justice indeed. I should have gone to law school.

Why being a Christian lawyer isn't an oxymoron
By Man in the Middle
One of the key points made by author Strom in this excellent book is that in America, justice may not be possible without legal representation, which in turn is often completely unavailable to those who need it most. As Strom notes, an accused criminal has a right to free legal representation in America, but victims do not. That leaves a huge hole of injustice in our system toward precisely those Jesus most especially wants aided and defended: widows, orphans and aliens, or as we might say it today, single moms, their kids, and people from other cultures.

Strom fleshes this out very thoroughly, both with a fine study of Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan, and with actual stories of people who have been aided in recent years by the Administer Justice legal aid charity he heads in the Chicago suburb of Elgin.

Strom's book was very helpful in clarifying why legal help has to be part of our response to injustice to the poor, so we do not merely bandage the wounded, and do not merely restore them to their previous precarious situation, but actually help them permanently arrive in a better place, both in this life and beyond.

Strom's vision is for this to become a nationwide movement of churches and legal volunteers, and I'm pleased to note that our own church opens a new legal assistance office in its main building this coming Monday. It had previously been off-site, but Strom makes a good point that we need to welcome the poor more directly to our churches. Since the center at our church uses only lawyers as volunteers, and I am not a lawyer (IANAL) it was recently suggested I volunteer at Administer Justice. I'm finding it a good fit for me, and hope it will indeed blossom and grow nation-wide.

As for the book, I've read other good ones about the Good Samaritan, such as Tea with Hezbollah: Sitting at the Enemies Table Our Journey Through the Middle East, but found enough new and different insights here to also make this book highly recommended!

Living out the Good Samaritan parable
By Ken L.
In this day and age when the American public has negative perceptions of both Christians and lawyers, Bruce Strom demonstrates what a vital and positive role Christian lawyers can and must have in our society. Gospel Justice beautifully lays out a vision for living out Jesus' parable of the good Samaritan. God calls us to work for a society based on love and justice. Strom shows us how it can be done - one legal aid client at a time.

Parted by death. Tethered by love. Lainey Bloom’s high school senior year is a complete disaster. The popular clique, led by mean girl Wynter Woods, bullies her constantly. The principal threatens not to let her graduate with the class of 1997 unless she completes a major research project. And everyone blames her for the death of Wynter’s boyfriend, Danny Obregon. Danny, a gorgeous musician, stole Lainey’s heart when he stole a kiss at a concert. But a week later, he was run down on a dangerous stretch of road. When he dies in her arms, she fears she’ll never know if he really would have broken up with Wynter to be with her. Then his ghost shows up, begging her to solve his murder. Horrified by the dismal fate that awaits him if he never crosses over, Lainey seeks the dark truth amidst small town secrets, family strife, and divided loyalties. But every step she takes toward discovering what really happened the night Danny died pulls her further away from the beautiful boy she can never touch again.

Great read!
By Alissa K Berzen
I am normally not a fan of YA fiction, or even the supernatural genre-- but this novel was seriously impossible for me to put down. I must have read it in record time because the story just held my attention so well. I am a pop culture junkie, and as a fellow 90s teen (Class of '98 here) all of the 'period references' had me hooked-- music, TV, fashion, tech, even some of the slang totally had me transported back to that time. It definitely left me wanting more!

Haunting, romantic, suspenseful YA set in 1996
By Jill Ratzan
High school senior Lainey never expected to be blamed when the body of fellow senior Danny Obregon was found in the woods one summer night in 1996. She certainly never expected that Danny's ghost would return to the small town Ash, or would ask her to discover the true identity of his murderer. Sure, Danny and Lainey bonded over their mutual love of grunge music, but wasn't he dating the snobbish Wynter - Lainey's best friend's twin sister? Now Lainey and Danny are racing against a clock to solve a small-town mystery . . . forcing Lainey to balance her supernatural love life with school, family, a part-time job, and a high-stakes Spanish project that threatens to eclipse even the most persistent of ghostly visitors.

Enough clues are provided for the clever reader to figure out who killed Danny (and why), but they're well-hidden, making readers guess along with Lainey. The characters are relatable, the plotting is sharp, and the romance is palpable - but what truly stands out about Grunge Gods is its atmospheric setting. The woods and graveyards of Ash are exactly the sort of spooky places spirits from another world might congregate, and debut author Kimberly G. Giarratano peppers Lainey and Danny's story with the technology, fashion, and soundtrack of 1996: historical fiction for today's teens, nostalgia for thirtysomethings.

Giarratano knows the landscape of YA lit, and her haunting, romantic, suspenseful historical novel will be a hit with readers who loved The Caged Graves by Dianne Salerni or In The Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters. I look forward to more to come from this talented new voice in YA fiction.

Captivating YA mystery!
By KA Mac
Lainey Bloom has typical teenage problems to deal with: bullies and boys, grades and an unsympathetic principal. Until she witnesses her boyfriend, Danny's, murder. Now Lainey is spending her senior year trying to figure out who killed him. The kids at school think she's responsible, her dad is MIA, and even her friends are flaking out on her. As Lainey puts the pieces of Danny's dearth together, it becomes increasingly clear that someone does not want the truth uncovered.

I could not put this book down! Giarratano is a master at ramping up the tension. Every character has their own agenda, and its nearly impossible to figure out who Lainey can trust, and who's hiding something, or out to get her. Yes, there is a paranormal element, but the ghost story is touching and beautifully done -- never cheesy or over the top. I would call this an expertly plotted YA mystery. Highly recommend!
