Very reader friendly. Explains very clearly and thoroughly the history of the 7 sacraments of the Catholic Church. Worth the price and would definitely recommend this book for anyone seeking to learn the history behind the sacred from the Church's beginning to the sacraments we celebrate today.

Suzanne Branciforte teaches at the University of Genoa. She is the author of Parliamo italiano!, a multimedia program for learning Italian and SA¬, lo so!, a basic language program for middle school students of Italian. She is a translator and interpreter, and has published a translation of Renata ViganA's collection of short stories and Partisan Wedding. Her research and writing focus on linguistic and cultural mediation between Italy and the U.S, Italian American cultural identity, and the Second World War. Born and raised in New York, she currently lives in Camogli, Italy.

If you need extra practice, this Workbook is for you.

First of all, be aware this is the Parliamo Italiano Workbook and not the Textbook (which is sold separately).

Second of all, this is the 4th edition Workbook that accompanies the 4th edition Textbook. Do not make the mistake of buying this for use with a different edition Textbook.

I have taught Italian for many years at the college level, and this book is one of my favorites.

This Workbook is made entirely of exercises and there are NO THEORY or VOCABULARY LISTS, which you can find in the Textbook.

It is very well structured, namely, it is easy to understand which exercises correspond to which section in the Textbook.

At the end of each unit, there is a very useful Pratica Comunicativa.

The book also has two sections: a Lab (or Audio) section and a Video section. The Audio and Video materials can be found online at the link given in the Workbook and accessible through the code - also in the Workbook.

All in all, if you are looking for extra practice, go for this Workbook.

If you want to learn Italian (grammar + practice), buy the Textbook, which comes with plenty of exercises, too.

Not a very good tool

We use this book in my class, and I really dislike it.

The grammatical explanations are weak, and presented in an ineffectual way. They aren't organized well: the grammatical explanations almost get lost on the page.

The verb presentation was virtually a recipe for failure for my class. There was absolutely no discussion of why verb conjugation works the way it does, ie no discussion of 1st, 2nd, 3rd person, no discussion of singular vs plural (I took Spanish and German and have very strong English skills, so I understood this, but the rest of my class did not). The 2nd and 3rd conjugations (-ere and -ire) were dumped all at once along with a huge verb list including the -isc form of -ire verbs. I thought the -ere work should have been separated from -ire verb work, so students could gain some mastery of one first, and the -ire verbs (normal and -isc form) should have been broken apart into 2 lessons groups. No way should there have been a huge verb list with an introduction. Also, reflexive verbs were introduced as vocabulary with NO explanation of how to use them until well after the fact (why bother teaching them as vocab if not going to give the skills to handle them?) and the explanation was inadequate (it simply introduced piacere conversational usage without explaning that piacere is reflexive). If you have some prior knowledge like I did, you are ok with these things, but if not... good luck because you will need it.

I also did not like the dialogues. They included vocabulary that was not explained in the margin notes and also was not available within the book's translation glossary. Another annoying thing... they used compound prepositions (nella, sulla) early but with no clarifying info. So, its was unnecessarily difficult to understand the dialogues.

The English-Italian, Italian-English glossary at the back of the book was virtually useless. At a minimum, words used in the text should have been available in the back of the book.

The exercises in both the textbook and workbook were weak and ineffectual. They did not build strength in sentence writing skill or appropriately emphasize the grammatical concepts under study. Example: 6 conjugation forms, but practice only with Io and tu responses. Or, even duller, repeating the same sentence with only a single idiom exchange... a waste of ink and paper and time. I found it more useful to write out my own sentences using the grammatical elements we covered, because the book exercises did not adequately reinforce anything.

The online material was a pain in the neck to get set up. If you make a mistake in the set up process, like I did, you need to create a new email account to start over. The online exercises were every bit as weak as the book exercises. They were particularly deficient in building listening skills. There should have been aflot more listening content at an easier comprehension level in the beginning units. I found the speakers hard to follow because they spoke too quickly. Which, in chapter three, would have been ok, but to start, that was not a recipe for success.

I suppose you could make the case that this book is teaching conversational Italian, but I do not think it succeeds there, either. It is hard to make small talk conversation when foundation skills are so weakly wrought that it is hard to construct sentences on the fly.

I am sure there are much better books out there. The online content for Prego! looked great, I wish that book had been chosen for our class.

Check twice

Please check twice before ordering this ACTIVITIES MANUAL. I thought I was ordering the TEXTBOOK! This was a fairly expensive mistake. I ended up ordering the THIRD EDITION of the text. That meant that I have a workbook that doesn't follow the text; but it is good practice (without the disk that comes with the 4th edition).

Dependent arising is the backbone of the Buddha's doctrine -- all the other lessons he taught relate to it, or refer to it in some way -- yet it is the least understood. Yet when dependent arising is seen in the light of the central myth of the Buddha's day (the creation of First Man and how that relates to our creation of self) the whole structure becomes much clearer, and many of the points of confusion are straightened out. People have long asked, for example, how the 'actions' of the second step precede consciousness in the third, or why we seem to be told that we would want to completely stop consciousness, and contact with the world, and feeling. All these questions are easily answered when we see where the structure came from, and what the lesson is really about.

A bold, brilliant work

Without either academic credentials or the imprimatur of a traditional lineage, Linda Blanchard has dared to suggest that one of the central tenets of Buddhism, paticcasamuppâda, dependent arising, has been misunderstood by fifteen centuries of commentators from Buddhagosa to Bhikkhu Bodhi. In fact, she suggests that the 12-nidana version of dependent arising means essentially the opposite of what the traditions say it does.

That Blanchard has succeeded in this breathtaking endeavor sufficiently to have its central thesis published in Prof. Richard Gombrich's Journal of the Oxford Center for Buddhist Studies suggests that she might be on to something. Dependent Arising in Context contains her main thesis, an explication of the 12-nidana chain from the perspective of her interpretation, and an attempt to refine a new definition of sankharas based on it. Blanchard's intriguing and illuminating argument takes us by the hand and leads us through its scholarly idiosyncrasies, leaving us sometimes frustrated but ultimately convinced.

One of the frustrations that may confront readers is the book's refusal to settle into a recognizable genre. It lacks the rigorous scholarly diction and apparatus of an academic work; nor does it have the comforting tone of a typical "dharma book" , despite its apparently having been written for practitioners. It demands a reader whose search for dharma truth can accommodate a rigorous intellectual engagement with the Pali texts, a niche audience to be sure. Yet those who are willing to make that commitment will find this most challenging of Buddhist doctrines unlocked in a way that opens a host of valuable insights into how our illusion of a static, vulnerable self is produced and maintained.

I think many readers are likely to find Dependent Arising in Context unsettling in its understated iconoclasm, but they are guaranteed to come away understanding one of the foundational doctrines of Buddhism in a radiant new light. Dependent Arising in Context lifts the 12-nidana texts from their supernatural esotericism and presents them as a powerful tool to sharpen our observation of the self creating itself - and to enable us, by observing, to let go.

This is one of the best books on Buddhism I've read in 10 years

I know I am going to be reading this again. There is so much nuance and depth to this teaching. It feels a bit like the grand unified theory of Buddhism because it encapsulates so many of the topics that are repeatedly discussed in other teachings and books. I found this book because I was watching a dhamma talk on Dependent Origination and the teacher seemed to be struggling to explain it. He also started out by saying "it helps if you have an open mind about reincarnation" which struck me as an odd prerequisite. He seemed like he didn't really know what he was talking about to be honest, but I wanted to understand it better, so I checked Amazon and came upon this. I am so grateful to Linda Blanchard for writing this book.

I consider myself a secular Buddhist. I don't really care about what came before that I can't remember or what might come after that I can't possibly know. My feeling is that the teachings are incredibly practical, about our daily life, our struggles, our neuroses, and the human condition. She doesn't say, by the way, that there's no such thing as reincarnation, she just illustrates that the teaching of Dependent Arising (or Dependent Origination) is not about reincarnation, even though it is steeped in the language of birth, death, and rebirth. She makes a compelling argument that these are just familiar metaphors (based in Hindu creation myth) that Gotama used to address his audience in a language that was common to them. A good teacher understands his students' frame of reference, right?

Another aspect about this that was wonderful is that it is truly a middle path. I have known so many people get into Buddhism and get caught up in a lot of spiritual materialism, especially through renunciation, austerities, clothing, titles, etc., and I have seen several get very stoic as if the ultimate goal is to be like a lump, no emotion, no joy, everything is somehow a manifestation of attachment which is "bad". Many teachings make the goal sound like self-annihilation, an end to any will to continue. That never made any sense to me. It is very all-or-nothing thinking and seems not to be based in the reality of our nature. This book is so practical, helpful, and sane. I highly recommend it.

Linda Blanchard's mission in her book "Dependent Arising in Context" is to make Buddhadharma accessible and understandable. She has accomplished this. Dependent arising, Blanchard presents, is the core of pretty much all there is to Buddhism - understand DA, understand Buddha's message. It can be an intimidating subject, but Blanchard, well-versed in the Pali language and can extrapolate from the sources closest to the Buddha's actual teachings, lets us in on the long-misunderstood secret. Learning about the "chain" of things leading other things to happen can make life make sense. Thank you, Linda!

No attention to detail

This book had so many errors, the entire class including the instructor were confused. It is very sad to see a textbook in its fifth or sixth edition with so many mistakes. Many of the questions at the end of the chapter are so poorly written, that there was no solution. Clearly, the authors had a goal and a message to convey, but because there was no attention to detail, the message was muddy at best. I remain disenchanted with the general quality of textbooks, but this is one of the worst examples of a textbook I have ever seen. Come on America, educate!

Fifth Columnists in Britain

This 1941 book tells about the work of Tommy and Tuppence Beresford. The met and worked on an earlier case that involved Internal Security in the early 1920s when the beginning of the Great Depression caused turmoil in Great Britain. Now they want to get involved in the war effort but are told they are too old. Mr. Grant arrives with an undercover job for Tommy alone. He leaves for his destination, a boarding house near the sea (Leahampton). He meets the other guests. War time rationing is in effect. One boarder is a German refugee named Carl (Chapter 2). Tuppence has intelligence and shows it! We learn more about the other guests. Can anyone here be a Fifth Columnist? It doesn’t seem likely to Mrs. Blenkensop. Tommy reports to Mr. Grant about the other guests (Chapter 3).

Was Mrs. Blenkensop’s experience on the staircase a hint (Chapter 4)? Can she set a trap to discover who is snooping in her letters? Little Betty Sprot disappeared, a ransom note was found! Some of the people go looking and find the child just in time (Chapter 7)! One resident is taken away by the police. “No doubt whatever.” Meadowes learns of a hidden object (Chapter 9). But he has bad luck as he returns home (Chapter 12). Tuppence is sent on a mission to Leatherbarrow (Chapter 13). She gets a surprise (Chapter 14)! There is an elaborate plot to hide Fifth Columnists. She is made an offer if she tells all, like other Nazi sympathizers. Tuppence has a reply. Will she be saved at the last minute? Will the Fifth Columnists be exposed? [You’ll never guess!]

Chapter 15 has the explanation for the mysteries, such as the kidnapping of little Betty! German propaganda appealed to people’s desire or lust for power. But now the British have a list of all those prominent people who are Fifth Columnists. Chapter 16 tells about the Beresford’s children. There is another surprise when Sheila meets Carl again for a happy ending. Little Betty will also have a happier life. The Beresford’s children feel sorry for their parent’s dull life in wartime.

This is an interesting story as long as you don’t question any implausibilities, such as those children’s books. The idea of important people who are working for the enemy echoes the original story “The Secret Adversary”. You can read “The Double Cross System” by J. C. Masterman or “The Nazi Connection” by F. W. Winterbotham for true stories about WW II.

A Test of Knowledge

This is a good book, however the ebook reveals the answers along with the questions, which sort of takes away from your true knowledge of the Bible.

Print is too small to be readable

The print is so small that it is barely readable. I thought it would be a good investment as the description
made the book sound very interesting. However, because it is not readable, it was a dreadful decision
and waste of money.
