Really well written!

I'm about halfway through Learning RSLogix 5000 and I am loving it. There are a number of poor PLC programming books out there - books full of editorial issues, books written by authors who may be able to PLC program well but are for sure butchers of the English language, and books full of obsolete information and impractical sidebars. People who work in automation know that one thing they can never have enough of is time - which means it's imperative to just stop reading crummy books. And as well, it's imperative to promote a great book when you find one. Austin writes very well, at a level that's pragmatic, well-paced for his intended audience and provides illustrations that help provide clarity to complex topics. Very well done!

The book is a great read for those both new to Industrial Controllers as well as seasoned practitioners. The information is presented in a pragmatic fashion - giving real life reason why you might want/not want to do something - not just a theoretical book. I appreciated all of the side note information: there is a good deal of ancillary information in there. I also appreciated the quality and quantity of illustrations in the book - it keeps the read interesting and not dry. The author definitely has a great breadth and depth of knowledge which is apparent while the various topics of networking and Industrial Control Systems are discussed.

This book is alright I guess.
The information in this book you could really get from any marketing book. There are points in this book that would be helpful to someone, but not in my case. If you know anything about six-sigma, lean, TOC, TQM, and even VE-VM at all, this book might not be what you are looking for.

About the Author
A renowned author, advisor, and academic, Garman is a Fellow and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Virginia Tech University, where he directed the National Institute for Personal Finance Employee Education. He subsequently founded the Personal Finance Employee Education Foundation. Author of 40 book's and 200 academic research articles, Garman directed several award-winning research studies that link the financial fortunes of employers with the financial health of their employees. Research consistently shows that decreasing employee financial distress and improving personal financial well-being creates better workers. Garman's research has been the most cited in the field for over 20 years. He has worked for a U.S. senator in Washington, D.C., in economic development in West Africa, and for a national non-profit credit counseling organization. He is an elected Distinguished Fellow of both the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education and the American Council on Consumer Interests. Garman has served on advisory boards for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, International Board of Standards and Practices for Certified Financial Planners, American National Standards Institute, National Foundation for Credit Counseling, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and National Advertising Review Board. His consulting includes work for Profit Sharing/401(k) Council of America, Manulife Financial, AT&T, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, and U.S. Department of Defense. His work has been featured in hundreds of publications, including USA Today, New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, and U.S. News & World Report, and he has appeared on National Public Radio and NBC Nightly News.

Raymond Forgue retired after 28 years as an associate professor in the Department of Family Studies at the University of Kentucky. He served as chair of the department and acting dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences. Forgue taught various courses in consumer studies, personal finance, and insurance. His professional service has included the presidency of the American Council of Consumer Interests and the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education. Since retirement he has continued to write and consult on personal finance education training for the Accredited Financial Counselor certification program, AARP, and other organizations. Forgue serves on the Boards of the Personal Finance Employee Education Foundation and the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors.

Heavy, encyclopedic, comprehensive -- are those good words, or bad? You decide.

You will find limited information about the contents of the book wherever you look, so here is a description of what you will find inside this massive work.

First, this study of the Albin is organized around stem games. 221 stem games, in fact. But there appear to be 4 or 5 additional games referenced within the average stem game, so perhaps a thousand games are reproduced at least in part, 221 of them being complete games. A typical game will go unannotated for the first 3 to 20 moves, then receive annotations pointing out the different options at each move for several moves. It is not unusual for a game to end with 20 unannotated moves. And most of the annotations are in Informant symbolism, although some contain terse textual comments explaining the idea behind the move which begins the annotation. This is variation- and symbol-heavy annotation.

All told, it's very much like a database, which is not surprising, as the author, Luc Henris, produced a previous database for ChessBase on this very opening.

Second, it is both up-to-date and comprehensive. It includes games from St. Petersburg 1914 and Moscow 2012, games featuring Albin and Lasker but also Nakamura and Morozevich. The full sweep of approaches to the opening exist in this book.

Third, it is very well organized. It begins with a brief but informative strategic introduction, and ends with several appendices, including a variation tree, list of games, list of players, and an impressive three-page bibliography.

But it's an encyclopedia. This book can be used, but by no stretch of the imagination can it be read.

The pages are large and printed close to the center, so the binding may begin to wear out if you use it often. It's a heavy book. Thick paper. Thick covers. Typeface is somewhat large, which would appeal to older eyes and to those who want to insert annotations of their own.

Who might really want this book? A master or above who wanted to study theory on this opening; a gambit enthusiast who wanted to add this to his repertoire. This is not a good book for anyone below strong club level; if your rating doesn't start with a 2, think carefully. You have been warned.

This book offers a wide-ranging and critical examination of recent counter-radicalisation policies, using case studies from several countries.

Counter-radicalisation policies, such as the UK ‘Prevent’ strategy, have been highly controversial and increasingly criticised since their introduction. In this edited volume, voices from disciplines including sociology, political science, criminology and International Relations are brought together to address issues across the global roll-out of counter-radicalisation agendas. In so doing, the book critically interrogates: (i) the connections between counter-radicalisation and other governmental programmes and priorities relating to integration and community cohesion; (ii) the questionable dependence of counter-radicalisation initiatives on discourses and assumptions about race, risk and vulnerability to extremism; and, (iii) the limitations of existing counter-radicalisation machineries for addressing relatively new types of extremism including amongst ‘right-wing’ activists.

Through examining these questions, the book draws on a range of contemporary case studies spanning from counter-radicalisation in the UK, Germany and Denmark, through to detailed analyses of specific preventative initiatives in Australia and the United States. Conceptually, the chapters engage with a range of critical approaches, including discourse theory, autoethnography and governmentality.

This book will be of much interest to students of radicalisation, critical terrorism studies, counter-terrorism, sociology, security studies and IR in general.

Christopher Baker-Beall is Lecturer in International Relations at Nottingham Trent University.

Charlotte Heath-Kelly is postdoctoral fellow with the Institute of Advanced Study, University of Warwick. Her most recent book is Politics of Violence: Militancy, International Politics, Killing in the name (Routledge, 2013).

Lee Jarvis is Senior Lecturer in International Security at the University of East Anglia. His books include Terrorism a Critical Introduction (2011) and Times of Terror: Discourse, Temporality and the War on Terror (2009).
