About the Author

Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian politician, diplomat, founding father of political science, and author of the preeminent political treatise, The Prince. Born in Florence, Italy, Machiavelli held many government posts over his lifetime and often took leading roles in important diplomatic missions. During his time visiting other countries and nation states, Machiavelli was exposed to the politics of figures like Ceasare Borgia and King Louis XII, experiences which would inform his writings on state-building and politics. Machiavelli s political career came to an abrupt end when the Medici overthrew Florence, and he was held as a prisoner under the new regime. Tortured for a short time, he was released without admitting to any crime or treason. At this point, Machiavelli retired and turned to intellectual and philosophical pursuits, producing his two major works, The Prince and Discourses on the First Ten Books of Titus Livy. He died in 1527 at the age of 58.

Harvey C. Mansfield is William J. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Government at Harvard University. He is the author of many books including, Statesmanship and Party Government, The Spirit of Liberalism, and Taming the Prince and is the translator of works by Machiavelli and Tocqueville.

A Poor Translation

I have been using Wootton's translation of The Prince in a university program where the texts are set by the faculty. This year we changed to the Mansfield translation and I've requested that we return to Wootton's.

In his attempt to provide an "accurate" translation of the Italian, Mansfield made the mistake of many translators in overlooking the clarity of his English prose.

For example, where Wootton writes, "he increased the strength of one of the most powerful Italian states," Mansfield writes, "he . . . increased the power of a power in Italy." (15) There are other odd uses of diction in Mansfield, for example, where Wootton speaks of a "founder," Mansfield uses the word "introducer." (23) And though concise in places, Mansfield has a tendency to write long sentences, perhaps in imitation of the Italian, where Wootton is more to the point.

If you're still not convinced, compare the following passages:

Wootton: "So, too, with those who, having been private citizens, were made emperors of Rome because they had corrupted the soldiers. Such rulers are entirely dependent on the goodwill and good fortune of whoever has given them power. Good will and good fortune are totally unreliable and capricious."

Mansfield: ". . . as also those emperors were made who from private individual [sic] attained the empire through corrupting soldiers. These persons rest simply on the will and fortune of whoever has given a state to them, which are two very inconstant and unstable things."

Tricky Work, Tricky Translation--Highly Recommended!

Machiavelli was a moderately significant figure in Renaissance Florence at the time that city was busy shaping the essence of the modern world. His works (all of them, but especially the Prince) capture much of what is pivotal in this culture. The book is advice to princes on how to seize and hold power. Mostly, that means you need to trick people and use ruthless violence intelligently. (He suggests that, if you could invent something like the Catholic Church, you'd be in a specially good position to set up a rule that would draw a lot of allegiance and a lot of taxes, would have no responsibilities, and would never end.) It's great reading as literature and as history, and also incredibly subtle and insightful as an analysis of human psychology. Mostly, this work praises cunning intelligence; it is also written for the reader who possesses the same. Consequently, it is a book that requires real patience and attention if its real treasures are to be found. Mansfield's translation is, I believe, the best for allowing one to look for the inner depth of the book. The translation is inspired by the work of Leo Strauss, and, as is typical of Straussian translations, it is a translation that is extremely careful to reflect the subtleties of the language of the original in order to retain their complex intimations etc. This is the translation I use when I teach the book because of its precision and elegance. It also has helpful historical notes that provide some of the essential context that is necessary to understanding Machiavelli's words; (Machiavelli often, for example, describes some historical figure in a fashion which will suggest the opposite of his true point to the reader who does not take the trouble to learn the details of the context he is referring to, and Mansfield is helpful in supplying guides to the modern reader for what to study in order to get past these textual deceptions). Overall, this is an outstanding translation of one of the great books of Western culture. I recommend it highly.

Carel van Schaik is a professor of biological anthropology at the University of Zurich, where he is director of the Anthropological Institute and Museum. He lives in Zurich, Switzerland.

and *The Good Book of Human Nature* is one of them

There are a handful of books that have truly changed my opinions across the board on the most important issues, and *The Good Book of Human Nature* is one of them. In a lifetime of reading the bible and at least the last twenty-five years of biblical scholarship, this has to be among the freshest, most useful analyses I've encountered. After a lifetime as an exceptionally committed evangelical Christian I became an atheist long ago, but Carel van Schaik and Kai Michel have renewed my respect for religion and the bible (although I remain an atheist), providing a new understanding of the crucial and beneficial place of the Abrahamics and the bible in the cultural evolution of our species. And that's a lot.

A must read for bible skeptics.

Before I continue let me submit a bit of a gripe. I bought the book .. a month later I was invited to use, free for one month, Kindle's unlimited reading program (I had purchased a Kindle Paperwhite). The instructions stated that I had to use one click ordering for the unlimited reading program. I one click ordered the kindle version of this book because I wanted an easier way to check unfamiliar words (using the Kindle dictionary). I was promptly billed another $20 (i had now spent $40 for this book - grrr). Going into the fine print I realized this program wasn't for all books, only for a select few. I tried to return the hard cover book but found that I was a few days too late. Now with my angry tirade out of the way:

From the time I was a very young child, my view of the bible was that it was nothing but a series of fairy tales (the church would be wise to stop teaching children this way - if they haven't done so already). Anyhow I recently ran across a book review excerpt from this book and immediately put my order in for it. It's everything I had hoped it would be. It makes the bible make sense. Also, it's very well written. There's an amazingly large amount of information to be passed on to us but it's organized in such a manner that even I can keep all that information in perspective (something that gets ever harder as you pass on into your waning years).

About the Author
Marilyn Wolf is Farmer Distinguished Chair and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She received her BS, MS, and PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1980, 1981, and 1984, respectively. She was with AT&T Bell Laboratories from 1984 to 1989. She was on the faculty of Princeton University from 1989 to 2007. Her research interests included embedded computing, embedded video and computer vision, and VLSI systems. She has received the ASEE Terman Award and IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Education Award. She is a Fellow of the IEEE and ACM and an IEEE Computer Society Golden Core member.. She is the author of two successful Morgan Kaufmann textbooks on embedded systems: Computers as Components, Third Edition (2012; 4e under contract); and High-Performance Embedded Computing, Second Edition (2014).

A uninspired and ineffective textbook

This is a terrible textbook.

The book manages to be overly verbose yet simultaneously too shallow to convey any meaningful knowledge. The author's style is dry and lacks impact, sapping the excitement out of embedded systems. Wolf may be knowledgeable, but she is entirely unable to pass that knowledge on to her readers.

The text is rife with errors, both technical and grammatical. This includes examples explicitly designed to clarify a point, which are consequently become even more confusing. It is hard to believe this is a 4th edition. The editors clearly got paid to fall asleep to Wolf's coma-inducing writing style.

The author has chosen to make extensive use of UML diagrams, but these often include a questionable choice of components with inconsistent/unintuitive associations. More than once, I was more confused about an example architecture after reviewing the associated UML. Similarly, most of the exercises are lazy, existing more as chapter padding than as actual aids in understanding.

Instructors, if you care at all about your students, please stop selecting this text for your courses.

If you're learning on your own, pick up a more practical volume on embedded systems (e.g., Making Embedded Systems: Design Patterns for Great Software) and separate texts on operating systems / computer architecture.

I plan to sell this as soon as my class is over.

One of the best books around but not for the beginner, advanced beginner ok, you need to know how to draw somewhat but I love the way things are explained and so happy I got it to home my skills. It works you through composition, light and shadow and different mediums that you can draw with. I would give it 6 stars if I could.

Good for beginners...

Vic Bearcroft's Drawing and Painting Wild Animals is good for people who want to learn how to paint in acrylics or draw in colored or graphite pencil, though not all of his art is as good as the cover image may lead you to think. Many of the drawings/paintings in this book appear blurry or incomplete, especially his pastel paintings, but, since I have practically no talent when it comes to acrylics, and am starting to work with colored pencil, I find this to be a good book on both subjects. If you are looking for a decent all-round animal art instruction book then this is one of the better ones, especially for beginning artists.
