Telling it like it is!

If your someone who has to finish a series once you start it, good luck finding something worthwhile here.

I read the previous reviews before I purchased the book and now that I have read it, I have to agree with the negative publicity. I was almost tempted to go thru the book again and count how many times the author used "sick", "wicked", and "bro" in the book. The author even introduced vampire slang halfway thru the book. I get that the she is trying to impart that these are edgy characters but does she have to pound it home. Even the goth clothing was given more importance in the book than character development. I know every charm on every choker down to the name of the tennis shoes being worn. (Vans tennis shoes, by the way. It was brought up on several occasions.) Yet, I couldn't tell you much about any of the vampires other than the fact that they were hot or a babe.

The story progressed very little from the first book. The evil vampire that died in the previous book was able to imprint his DNA on someone but you don't know how. Riley's brother Seth was cured of his quickening but you don't know how. Riley keeps having the same dreams over and over. Not just one vampire sending her dreams now but two. Eli leaves to kill Victorian but returns with important information about Riley but your not sure what that is. The story leads up to a chase scene that abruptly ends the book right in the middle of the chase. If it wasn't for the numerous sex scenes, I would think that this book was for a younger crowd.

All I got from the book is that everybody wants to have Riley because she is a babe. What are the other characters for? The "good" vampires do nothing but get frustrated with Riley for fighting foes by herself and the evil vampires round up victims on drugs and kill them or make a bunch of newlings. What was the point of this book? I was ready to put it down after the sixth dream sequence but I kept hoping that it was going to get better. I knew it was a lost cause when I read the word "sick" used twice in the same sentence with two different meanings.

I hate to be cruel but I would skip this sick book and save your money for another wicked series bro.

This book is meant for Twilight fans

No spoilers. Here is just my annoyances with the book as a whole. I'm early twenties and I got so annoyed with the whole "bro", "dude" nonsense considering that they are supposed to be 200+ years old. They really didn't act like someone from the 18th century. Eli especially for me was annoying considering he was very insecure and immature all the time. Almost every time they were together he had to establish his dominance and say how much she is his. Plus, I know already that you find feisty girls attractive, you don't need to beat me over the head with it. However, considering Riley constantly had to talk about how much of a badass she was or how she didn't need anyone's help, they really were a good match. I got tired of Elle Jasper constantly repeating Riley's inner monologue. The whole mindreading stuff was very annoying, especially considering they could just pop into her brain anytime. Why even bother asking her questions when you really can just read her mind to get them? It doesn't make sense. It would however make sense for any normal person to admit when they are in trouble. For instance, she is experiencing the kills of a vampire serial killer. Obviously, she wants that to stop, but instead of going to the vampires (Duprees) who probably would know more than she does about what is going on, she tries to keep it to herself.

Plus it seemed like the only reason Eli ever reads her mind is to get validation on how hot Riley thinks he is, and if by some random chance that she is not thinking of how much she wants to hook-up with Eli, he gets in a snippy fit about it. Granted those rare times include her thinking of wet dreams with Victorian and/or her serial killer visions.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention Victorian, he's also an incredibly good-looking vampire who possesses the body of a 21 year-old. He, like Eli, was somehow inexplicably drawn to Riley. First, it was because of her rare blood type, but after what seemed like two seconds, became forever in love with her. That last sentence was essentially what happened in book one, but his obsession carries over to this book. I have a weird love/hate relationship for Victorian. I don't understand his obsession with Riley because she is a whiney woman who wants to think she's a tough badass because she used to smoke weed and hang with the bad crowd. That doesn't make you a badass, it makes you a delinquent. I digress. I liked him because even though he was last book's villain, he's trying in his own little way to reform and help Riley. God only knows why, he geminately cares about her. Plus, I can kind of see him coming from the past based on his antiquated sense of love. Also why must authors insist on always having a love triangle? That doesn't help the plot and seems like more of a crutch to provide filler than anything else.

Honestly, I doubt I would read the next book. Her characters are too annoying and self-absorbed to be deemed likeable. This book would sit well with 14-18 year olds who just got done with Twilight.

Definitely not the vampire novel for me

Elle Jasper's Everdark most definitely does not stand alone. While the pacing at the beginning is slow and involves plenty of reminders as to what came before, they are not reminders that stand without context. This is fine if you read Afterlight a while ago and need a refresher, but it's nearly useless if you haven't. Even after finishing Everdark I'm STILL not sure on some details of how vampires work in this author's world. (I have strong feelings on why most series novels should be able to at least marginally stand alone; I won't go into the whole spiel here.)

Jasper's vampires didn't quite do it for me. They feel more like semi-generic supermen than vampires of myth and legend; in particular their lack of sensitivity to sunlight removes much of the "curse" aspect that vampirism used to have. The vampire good-guy family's mind-reading ability also disappointed me; it seemed to conveniently work or not work according to the author's needs at the time.

The characters are interesting, although seeing old vampires saying "dude" repeatedly didn't work for me; I expect that'll be reader-dependent. I couldn't quite buy into it; I understand the need for vampires to blend in with the changing times, but it seemed to come too easily for them and they read as totally modern. Similarly, there are ways to convey a character's accent and style of speech that don't rely on heavy dialect in every line--less can be more in that area.

Everdark didn't appeal to me in style and tone, but maybe it's just aimed at a younger audience. I rarely find it difficult to enjoy even young adult novels, but perhaps there's a band of ages in the late teens and early 20s that this would work for.

Initial feedback - good, but missing something

I've worked in low and high-level 2D graphics for 20 years, but 3D graphics are almost completely new to me so I was very excited to find this book, especially since my latest focus is in HTML/Javascript - the environment for which the new HTML5 WebGL is targeted. The first chapter is wonderfully informative, but may require some graphics background to appreciate. In fact, this old dog learned something really basic on page 3 (I always had a slightly different definition of what "immediate mode" and "retained mode" meant). By the end of the first chapter you're already getting into how Matrix math works and how it applies to 3D graphics. This was one of the better examples I have seen.

There is a TON of information in this book covering most aspects of 3D, but the concepts are pretty hard core and I think a newbie programmer would be intimidated and not find much of interest, and if you already have a solid foundation in 3D, you might this to be too focused on 3D concepts and not enough on how to switch to WebGL.

Other than feeling this book has a rather narrow audience, my only real complaint is that for such an exciting topic, the book itself leans too much towards the bland presentation of an academic text book with too few illustrations, and example code consists of uninspired projects. Some kind of very basic 3D game would have been much more interesting (and informative) than drawing kitchen furniture. I would have also liked some more information on generating 3D models - the tools/applications that are available and how to pull their models into your code.

3 stars seems a bit too low, but 4 seems too much as the book did not feed my enthusiasm for sitting down and actually learning this stuff.

Rather heavy duty material for graphics newcomers

Note that the title of this book includes the word "Professional". What exactly does this imply? Basically, it means that you have to be willing to learn a lot of technical material, but by doing so you will have a toolset that will serve you well in developing graphics for the web.

Here's what I mean: In some programming languages, it takes very few lines of code to produce graphics. Indeed, the Processing programming language will let you write exactly one line of code to produce a triangle on your screen. Then, in the Processing programming language, you can export that program as a web page.

By contrast, this book's first "Basic" graphics example is a triangle that requires roughly 100 lines of code (a mix of HTML, WebGL, and Javascript). That's a lot of code, but along the way, you are also learning a lot! Before you get to your first triangle, you will learn about: affine matrix transformations, linear algebra, the basics of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), Rasterization, and a brief history of OpenGL.

Like most Wrox books, this is very well organized and very instructive. Expect to learn a lot. But don't expect to just throw a couple lines of code up on the screen and get the next great web-based game. If you're willing to work hard, this book is worth it!

This book gives a great introduction WebGL.
I had very little experience with 3D Programming and no experience with OpenGL prior to reading this book and I found it to give a very lucid and easy understanding of all the fundamentals as well as deeper insight in this new field.
Code examples are very usefull for anyone planning to incorparate 3D graphics on their website.
Being the first book I read on the subject I don't have anything to compare to but highly recommend it for anyone who wants to get familiar with WebGL.

Another great series book for all ages

The third book in the Tom Swift Young Inventor continues the strong writing style and plots from the first two titles. Science fact and science fiction are nicely blended, with strong narrative to keep the reader interested to the end. I liked the fact that Tom's sister, Sandy, is a major character in this book. Though the "mystery" was easily solved early on (at least to me!) the atmospere and action was still entertaining. I am looking forward to the next one!

The writing is for kids, but the new series is a nice update. My 9yo son love the new over the old. I still like the writing in the older series.
