Saw it today, bought it on kindle and read it over the afternoon!

Don't recall where I saw the book cover early this morning, but I fell in love with Bob's picture and bought the Kindle edition. Downloaded it, got sucked in reading the first few pages and didn't put it down until I'd finished reading it a few hours later.

I laughed out loud and had tears running down my cheeks as I read their very touching and heart-warming story ... and I hated that the book had to end.

Thanks for sharing your stories with us, James and Bob!

Feel Good Story of Redemption

This is the best read I have had in a long time. First heard about it on TV, where they interviewed the author. It is based on a true story and I would love to see it as a movie. I had a ginger tom who died at the age of 13. He was so sweet a companion but he never did the amazing stuff this cat did. It is as though this cat was sent by God or an angel, to help this man find a sense of guidance and purpose, thus changing his life. It reveals so much about others and how they perceive the homeless and down-on-their-luck. It does much to reinforce my belief that animals are put here to make us better people, so we should be their guardians and protectors in return. Awesome book.

Wonderful, uplifting, fast read of redemption and healing; a must read.

Praise to James Bowen and Bob! I think Mr. Bowen and his editor did a fabulous job with the narrative of this book and in conveying the journey he and Bob have made together from drug addiction and living rough on the streets to a more stable and responsible existence. This book is a fine example of the healing powers of animals in giving someone without much hope something to live and strive for; to be a better person. As the quote goes, "My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog (in this case, cat) already thinks I am", so does Mr. Bowen try to become that person and succeeds very nicely. The prose is very down to earth and straight-forward and Mr. Bowen does not allow himself to be a victim and takes full responsibility for the actions which landed him on the streets. I love the theme of second chances in this book and that you've got to be able to recognize and act upon them. And obviously Bob is one uncommon cat as I've found ginger tabbies so often are, and very attached to his person, James. I hope this book changes both their lives for the better and may they have nothing but health and prosperity from this point forward.

Clear, concise, and useful!

This is a great book for anyone looking to add structure and logic to their addiction counseling practice. The book is well written and well organized. The language is easy to understand, and the concepts are useful. I particularly found the section on BSGS (Building Session Goals and Strategies) helpful. Dr. Y. takes an organized and thoughtful approach to what is often a chaotic and drama filled discipline. This a great book if you are looking to take a proactive and not reactive approach to counseling.

This book will help you learn how to interact with clients, families and co-workers in the field of substance abuse. At the end of each chapter there are helpful exercises to complete (with or without a partner) to help you get a better understanding of the topic and how to deal with a client who is at different stages of recovery or treatment. Another great feature is that it is small and light but compact with useful, professional information.

Haven't shot par yet!

Well, I am not at par yet...but this book is a tremendous help. I was doing and thinking about golf in so many wrong ways. I have dropped at least ten strokes in 15 days and looking forward to more improvement. Worth every penny so far!

It won't replace a PGA teaching pros but it will likely help shoot lower scores

Overall, I think the book is really good; having drills and a timeline are helpful. There are several drills that try to correct the most fundamental flaws of the amateur golfer (like swinging out-to-in for example). There are also several tips on what to look for if you video record your swing - video evidence is pretty tough to argue. Some of the drills are taken from other authors (Dave Pelz short game and putting bibles) which is nice because you are essentially getting an abbreviated version from those experts. I think if one completes the drills in the book the golf scores will drop. The stats that are included are really interesting about how pro golfers compare to amateur golfers.

Do I think one can build a fundamental, ground floor swing using this book? I doubt it. Can one video their swing, correct a flaw and reduce scores? Quite likely. I wish I could say that I am shooting par and that I no longer need the services of my local PGA teaching pro but I can't - it seems that some flaws (at least mine) simply evade detection without a highly trained eye.

I love this book because it really lays out a good approach to improving your game. That being said, forget about 30 days. If you pick one area of your game at a time and work through it you will improve. Just figure on about a year. Love it.

About the Author
Bill Yenne is the author of more than two dozen books on military, aviation, and historical topics, including Hap Arnold, The White Rose of Stalingrad, and Alexander the Great. WWII History Magazine wrote that his book B-17 at War “is a source of unending pleasure to the Flying Fortress fan,” and Air Force Magazine wrote that his primer on strategic air power “deserves a place on any airman’s bookshelf.” Yenne is a member of the American Aviation Historical Society.

The author has done an outstanding job researching the subject material for this book.

History well told

I'd never heard of this assassination plot. In the epilogue, the author explains why. An extremely dramatic prologue describes how the plot might have succeeded. The scholarship is impressive, the bibliography extensive, the writing spellbinding. I much enjoyed pronouncing the German names, titles, and organizations. The "Cast of Characters" and the "Acronyms" are very helpful lists for the reader recalling the many people and organizations involved. There are eighteen photos, including the alluring and tragic young Polish refugee, Wanda Pollack. Remarkable.

A new story about World War II history

I have read many books about World War II but never about the Tehran assassination plot. I enjoyed "Operation Long Jump," well written, an informative cast of characters and a useful bibliography. This book gives plenty of opportunities to practice your German pronunciation skills.

Easy to read, not a bad book

This is a book I'm using for my Cognitive Psychology class at college. My professor is actually the author of the book, which at first I found annoying, but it's actually a good book, and it helps that he knows it from cover to cover. There are some great links and also photos, it makes a complicated subject easier to read. I love the bolded important words!

About the Author

About the Author

Laurence J. Peter was born in Canada and received an EdD from Washington State University. An experienced teacher, counselor, school psychologist, prison instructor, consultant, and university professor, he wrote articles for many journals and magazines as well as several books. He died in 1990.

good, in specific situations

I prefer Bartlett's for one major reason: You know where what you're looking for came from. There's plenty of good material in here, don't get me wrong, but if it's a Shakespeare quotation, I like to know *exactly* where it came from in MacBeth, so I can find it and cite it!

It does have an interesting organization-- by theme-- which is different from Bartlett's and can make flipping through it amusing. In that way, you can actually pick this up and just browse instead of reading 16 pages of lines from Paradise Lost, all together.

However, if you're looking for something practical, something you can use to give people an answer if they ask you, "Hey, that was interesting, where did it come from, exactly?," you're not going to be able to answer the "exactly" part. Just be aware of that.

Great for writers/speakers

A lot of quote books focus on the timeless and famous or the "witty" and not-so-meaningful. Peter's Quotations is a clasic among public speakers and essayists because it focusses on what these people are likely to need. It addresses broad, abstract topics such as "kindness" but also lays out the lawyer jokes. The topics are a good mix of the immortal and the current and, while often witty, are never ridiculous or campy (well, almost never campy). I've used it for years as a debater and public speaker, as a coach, and as a teacher. The best indication I can give you of its outstanding usefulness is that I buy a new copy for my speech team every year because a graduating senior always steals the old one. I'm on my third personal copy because I've worn two others out.
