This book is a great read if you plan on going on tour and have never been. It'll start you somewhere so don't go into it without any knowledge of how going on tour is supposed to be. Experience is still the best teacher though.

an encyclopedic recipe collection ... but only if you combine fruits and vegetables

First, this is a gorgeous book. Beautiful photographs of almost all the recipes, and compact yet comprehensive sections on juicing (and smoothie) ingredients, suggested juicing regimens, and recipe recommendations for specific ailments or nutrients. The majority of recipes are for juices, but recipes for smoothies (with and without dairy or nut/seed milk) and quenchers (juice blends diluted with sparkling water or other beverage) are also included.

I'm new to juicing, but I've been drinking green smoothies (blended fruit and leafy greens -- no dairy) for months now. Juicing seemed like the perfect adjunct to the smoothies -- I wanted to add more vegetables to my diet. If you've done any research about juicing or smoothies, you've seen the debate about combining fruits and vegetables. If you're not a fan of combining them, this is not the book for you -- virtually all of these recipes combine the two food groups. (While I don't generally combine them myself, my current favorite juice is Natalia Rose's Life Force Powerade -- kale, cucumber or celery, beets, ginger, apples and lemon. Drinking this the first thing in the morning is an amazing start to the day.)

Having said that, this book is an inspiration to me as a juicing newbie, and gives me plenty of ideas for both my juices and green smoothies. BUT -- much of this content is duplicated in Ms. Savona's book, The Big Book of Juices and Smoothies: 365 Natural Blends for Health and Vitality Every Day (The Big Book of...Series) (Spiral-bound). Until recently this was available here on amazon.com in a spiral-bound format -- a much more condensed version, and probably easier to use.

Either of these books is worth a look -- I think anyone interested in juices or smoothies would benefit on some level.

Creative Juicing

In the past few months I've read quite a few books on juicing. "The Big Book of Juices" is one of the most creative books I've seen so far. The fruit and vegetable blends are especially delicious. Who would have thought that grapefruit would go so well with carrots and celery. I've also never seen anyone blend broccoli with pears. Yet these all seem to work well. I especially enjoyed making the juice with passionfruit, orange juice and seltzer.

While you need a juicer for most of the recipes there are also some recipes for your blender. If you are feeling adventurous you might enjoy making a spicy drink made from chai tea, peaches, vanilla and yogurt. Most of the smoothie recipes use yogurt. The only thing you have to do first is to juice some of the fruit before you add it to the blender with the yogurt. Other fruits like mango and papaya are better just added to the blender as they don't juice as well. Specific instructions are not given on each recipe so you have to read the instructions at the start of the book and at the start of each chapter. Instead of instructions the author just gives a few sentences to inspire you to make the drink. This works well for individuals who have already been juicing for a few months but is not as helpful for someone new to juicing. From my own experience I learned to peel most fruits, especially citrus fruits. You will also want to peel mangoes, pineapple and papaya.

The last section in the book contains some recipes using sparkling mineral water. There are also some recipes for teas made with fresh herbs. There is an interesting tea made with licorice and mint. If you are looking for something to calm you at the end of the day there is a tea made with lemongrass, cardamom, orange zest, chamomile and mint. Unlike the other recipes, instructions are given for most of the recipes in the "Thirst Quenchers" section.

The recipes using lime sorbet are perfect for the summer if you don't mind a little sugar with your fruit drinks. For the most part all the drinks are sweetened with the natural fruit juice combinations. Quite a few of the drinks are flavored with ginger. You can always add a packet of stevia which is a natural sweetener.

This is a book you will use day after day! The pictures of the juices are beautiful and you might be intrigued by all the different shaped glasses the author found to display the juices in. If you have been juicing at least a few months then you will love this book. If you are just starting your juicing journey, try a few of the books listed at the end of this review - they were very helpful to me when I started juicing.

Great for juices and smoothies!

This book is awesome for the casual juice and smoothie maker. The book features over 400 drink recipes usually accompanied by a high resolution picture of the finished product. The recipes are great but what I found invaluable is how well certain ingredients go together that I would never had guessed without the guidance of the book. This not only led me to try new flavors but create several new recipes of my own that I keep in the back of the book using post it notes.

The one flaw I see with this book is that some of the recipes are a little redundant. Instead of adding in the notes section something along the lines of "Substitute carrots with cucumbers for a more refreshing drink," the book has an entirely new page of the exact same recipe but with the carrots swapped for cucumbers and a new name for it. There's only a handful of recipes like this but it had alerted me enough to comment about it.

Thoughtful Numerology

One of the most famous and mysterious of numbers is pi, the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. If you know some mathematics and work with logarithms, you know another important constant, e. Less well known is the number phi (the Greek symbol looks like a capital I superimposed on an o); it is in many ways simpler than the other two and is just as interesting. All you have to do is take a line segment of any length, and put a point on the line so that the point divides the line into a big segment and a little one, and so that the little segment is to the big segment as the big segment is to the line you started with. The section you made, and the connected mathematics and art, are described and illustrated in _The Golden Section: Nature's Greatest Secret_ (Walker Books) by Scott Olsen, which ought to get an award for the book with the greatest density of information in the smallest package. It has but 58 small pages, and half of those are taken up with illustrations (which are wonderfully selected ). But if you follow the pages, and have pencil, paper, and a calculator beside you, there are depths here that bigger books never touch.

It's not too interesting to put a point directly in the middle of a line. You get equal segments that way, or a ratio of one to one, or 1:1; and if a segment is 1, the whole line you bisected is 2, a ratio of 2:1. Plato knew, though, that that was one point that would divide the whole line into shorter and longer portions so that "the whole to the longer equals the longer to the shorter"; or if shorter is a, longer is b, and the whole is a + b, then a + b is to b as b is to a; in symbols, a + b : b as b : a, or a + b : b : a. The ratio is phi (pronounced "fye"). It's numerical equivalent is 1.6180339... (the ellipsis indicating its never-ending nature). There are plenty of surprising properties of this number, some of which you can find on your calculator. For instance, divide phi into one, and you get 0.6180339..., which is exactly one less than phi itself. If you square phi, you get 2.6180339..., which is exactly one more than phi itself. Phi shows up closely related to the Fibonacci Sequence, a series of numbers that shows up all over nature. Rectangles based on phi show up in architecture and art and even music.

"Because of its aesthetic qualities, embodied in its unique ability to relate the parts to the whole," writes Olsen, "golden ratios are used in the design of many modern household items." Credit cards, for instance, are very close to the 8 by 5 Fibonacci approximation of phi. Surely no one ever designed the first credit cards to reflect phi, but the ratio does seem to be inherently attractive. Olsen demonstrates that phi shows up in spirals of DNA, in human proportions, in icosahedrons, and so many other places. His handsome and accessible book is an exercise in an appealing numerology.

A really wonderful book

The Golden Section is a subject many have tried and failed to cover comprehensively. Generally these books either over-romanticize the subject and fail scientifically, or they tend instead to be over mathematical and run scared from the genuine (and still unexplained) mystery of why the Golden Section appears so widely in nature.

Scott Olsen's little book admirably steers a middle course through these choppy waters, covering everything from Lucas numbers and phyllotaxis to the common use of the 8:5 Fibonacci approximation to the Golden Section in nature and the visual arts.

I heartily recommend this book to anyone - from those with just a passing interest in the Golden Section like painters and musicians to more experienced mathematicians (check out for instance Bryson's extraordinary equations for the Solar Year on the back page!). It is an excellent book, beautifully produced and wonderfully illustrated. I'm giving it 5 stars.

excellent ideas; illustrations rendered too small

I loved the ideas, concepts, and relationships explained in the text, however, I was disappointed with the design and layout of the book. Books in this series seem to be intended as quick, entertaining, and beautiful overviews of their respective topics. This book succeeds on the first two measures, but falls short of beautiful. Several of the illustration pages are black background with faint white artwork and small text - tough to read. Many of the illustrations have notations with text so small one needs a magnifying glass. Several of the concepts are presented with many small illustrations crowding the page instead of one illuminating example shown large. Overall, the book was not as pleasing as other excellent works in the series such as "Sacred Geometry" and "Platonic and Archimedian Solids."
