The 120-year-old Fresh Air Fund, which gives free rural vacations to inner-city children, here provides readers the chance to explore not one but two period settings. In the summer of 1910, 12-year-old Hadassah (Dossi) Rabinowitz, born in Russia and now orphaned, leaves the small room she and her sister share on New York City's Lower East Side to spend two weeks with a Vermont farm family. She brings the blank book she has won for "best achievement" in her seventh-grade class, and her entries comprise the narrative. Hurwitz (author of the Class Clown books) does not attempt to ape a 12-year-old's writingAthe chapters are replete with dialogue and traditional exposition. The Meades have never met a Jewish person before but are open-minded. One daughter likes Dossi immediately; the other, standoffish at first, eventually becomes a good friend. The story line is somewhat artificially pumped up around a brand-new library book that gets ruined; although there is also a fire (in which Dossi plays a heroine's part), the chief interest lies in the conscientious presentation of two different cultures. Dossi reports excitedly on Mrs. Meade's canning and the girls' farm chores; she in turn tells the Meade sisters about the pickle barrels on Delancey Street and her sister's long days at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. Hurwitz's research is convincing and her protagonist sympathetic enough to forgive the author's few contrivances; readers will likely be drawn to this little-known slice of history. Ages 7-up.

Grade 4-6AIn 1910, a 12-year-old Jewish girl from New York's Lower East Side spends two weeks with a Vermont family through the Fresh Air Fund. Dossi, short for Hadassah, lives in a tenement room with her older sister and knows only the sights and smells of her crowded community. She takes two library books with her on the long train journey to help dispel her fears, but finds that her sponsors are warm and sharing people. Each experience on the Meades' farm is new for Dossi: the size of cows, the wonder of fireflies in the night, and the quantity of food on the table. There are mild cultural differences. The Vermonters have never seen a Jew and Dossi, although non-observant, will not eat pork or mix meat and milk products. Still, she becomes friends with the two girls in the family and helps to save a neighbor's livestock when a barn catches fire. Told through Dossi's journal entries, this pleasant story is sometimes marred by stilted conversation. However, it has a happy ending and the added interest of an actual historical person, Wilson Alwyn Bentley, who first photographed snowflakes.ASusan Pine, New York Public Library

Her immigrant parents are dead, and she lives with her older sister, Ruthie, who works in a garment factory to support them. Of course, the farm family is warm and welcoming, and we know that the initial tension between Dossi and one of the farm children will be worked out. Mary Azarian's occasional small woodcuts in black and white help create a sense of the period, and the first encounters between town and country, Jew and Christians, make it easy for Hurwitz to include lots of social historical detail, as Dossi tells them about how things are different in the city and they teach her how to milk a cow, pick raspberries, and watch the stars. The warm characterization will keep readers interested in a story that shows how the hosts as well as the visitor benefit from the encounter with the stranger. Hazel Rochman

Dossi is a poor girl who lives in the city.Her parents and younger sister,Velvel have passed away.Dossi's sister,Ruthi is the one who will take care of them.She works in the factory.When Ruthi signs Dossi up to be sent to the country,on a Fresh Air Fund vacation,Dossi is terrified and surprised.Soon,the day had come to go to the country.Dossi packed her bags and brought along a library book which was a new one.She and her friend,Mimi, didn't tell the librarian that Dossi was taking it away.Dossi prommises Ruthi that she will send a postcard to her as soon as she reaches her destination.In the country,she meets the gentile Meade family.Nell and Emma are around Dossi's age.Mr. Meade and Mrs. Meade also have two sons,Timothy and Edward.Nell chats nineteen to a dozen.Emma doesn't.There are a lot of things that Dossi hasn't seen.Like fireflies,cows,two yolks in one egg and many other things.She learns about a man named Snowflake Bentley.He is mad about snowflakes.Snowflake Bentley also takes photos of snowflakes not people.Dossi likes Nell but she wants to befriend Emma too.But Emma treats her like if she is not there.Will Dossi be able to befriend Emma before her holiday in the country ends?

A fast paced novel, good for a rainy afternoon

Haddassah (Dossi for short) is a Jewish girl lives in a cramped apartment in New York City. Her sister (Ruthi) signs her up for a Fresh Air Fund which sends poor children too the country for 2 weeks in the summer. Dossi leaves excited and yet afraid to go on vacation with a family she doesn't know in Vermont for 2 weeks. She is stunned by things in the country and doesn't even know what fireflies are. This is one fault that I found with the book, she seems to know NOTHING of the country, now I can believe she's never milked a cow, but some of the things she had never seen are unbelievable. Anyway during the book she sprouts friendship and learns new things of her trip. She meets new people and learns what the lovely countryside is like. This is a really fast paced book, you should be able to finish it within an hour or so, but nonetheless it is worth reading.

This was a great book. It is about Dossi, a poor Jewish orphan from New York City who is able to spend two weeks in August of 1910 in the Vermont countryside through the Fresh Air Fund. Dossi learns about country life from her hosts' two daughters, and Dossi in turn teaches them about city life. I highly reccomend this book.

It came and was really nice on the outside. But only the outside.

The inside was filled with pen and pencil (I mean, that's okay. It's a used book.) But with pages ripped out? And it wasn't just one or two, there were sections of the book just ripped out. I didn't inspect the book because the cover was okay and looked fine, but I got to class and ended up not being able to use this for my lab.

About the Author
Lee Judah Ames (January 8, 1921 – June 3, 2011 ) was an American artist noted for his Draw 50... learn-to-draw books. He was born in Manhattan, New York. His first job at age eighteen was at Walt Disney Studios. He has since led a career as an advertising artist, fine artist, cartoonist, designer, animation in-betweener, illustrator, and as an artist-in residence at Doubleday. His series of 26 Draw 50... books take a friendly and minimalist approach to teaching drawing while the books often contain no instructional text. He enlisted in the military and served as a second lieutenant during World War II. He and his wife Jocelyn resided in Mission Viejo, California.

Though the content of the book is fine, the condition, described as "good," I feel was not an honest evaluation of a book with significant wear and grease staining. It's usable for my purposes, but poorly rated.

Great for those interested in drawing

At first I just borrowed this book but I found that it was so helpful that we needed to own it! It's got good views of horses in a variety of poses. Our children were able to use the step by step method with barely any help at all. Ages 5 and 7, they have been drawing since about 2 years old or so, and may be slightly more advanced in drawing skills than average. They also like horses a lot, but have sort of run dry on ideas for new ways to draw them. Now, instead of asking Daddy to draw horses running or rearing or jumping, they have a whole variety of examples to learn from in one book. Very nice.

About the Author

Holly Hazlett-Stevens, Ph.D., is assistant professor of psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. She recently served as research coordinator for a large, multi-site investigation of the identification and treatment of panic disorder in a primary care medical setting (administered by the UCLA Anxiety Disorders Behavioral Research Program). Her main research interests include: generalized anxiety disorder, normal and pathological worry, anxiety and stress-related disorders, psychotherapy outcome research, and fear reduction.
