She's a former extension agent in the USDA's urban gardening program, a veteran Rodale garden book editor, and a writer for Organic Gardening magazine. Martin has authored two books and edited dozens of others. She lives in Allentown, PA.

Oooh... Rodale has a new book out!

I have treasured my 1971-copy of their first guide to organic gardening by Robert Rodale and have always considered them to be an authority on the subject. With this new book, you have an update to sage advice with pretty pictures (illustrations and photos) to look at! If you are new to the world of organic growing, there are a lot of great books out there from Eliot Coleman's Four Season Harvest to Ruth Stout's Gardening Without Work.
Here - is a great, straightforward guide to planting and growing for beginners. There are tips for taking care of weeds, good bugs vs. bad bugs, and pretty much anything that a new (or new-ish) organic gardener would need to know. If you are looking to establish better eating habits, there is no better way than to grow your own food. Get excited about the 2014 season with this beautiful book! And a little tip... and I am in no way association with the publisher... but at the time of writing, their website is offering a book promotion: free shipping, free gift, and you can return it if you don't like it.

I admit I was prepared to be critical of this book, and am. So many times basic and organic and garden means a chance to hop up on a soap box and spend a good part of the book on emotional choices. This one not only doesn't do that but seems to assume you picked it up so you're already interested. I like that. A lot!
It allows time to get into the heart of gardens, from selection of seed to testing soil to pests to harvesting and so much more. Refreshing and most welcome. It's a good first guide if you haven't gardened but it's also a good reference guide if you have. If you don't know a floating row cover from a cold frame, get this book. Love the garden journal notes...and little tidbits of information (oh so tweetable!).
I viewed my copy via NetGalley, but need to get a hard copy for my garden shelf. Nice job, complete without being wordy. Easy to read, easy to understand and doesn't talk down to readers. Well done - well worth the money.

Great information

I am enjoying reading Rodale's Basic Organic Gardening. It clearly describes how to set up organic gardening beds, gives lots of interesting information, and has a large section giving specific directions for success with each plant. There are sections on upkeep, pest control, weed management, and attracting beneficial organisms. There is a calendar describing what to do each month. It is clearly written, easy to read, and comprehensive. This is a great reference book for beginners as well as more experienced gardeners.
