About the Author

R oger A. Freedman is a Lecturer in Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was an undergraduate at the University of California campuses in San Diego and Los Angeles and did his doctoral research in nuclear theory at Stanford University under the direction of Professor J. Dirk Walecka. Dr. Freedman came to UCSB in 1981 after three years of teaching and doing research at the University of Washington.

At UCSB, Dr. Freedman has taught in both the Department of Physics and the College of Creative Studies, a branch of the university intended for highly gifted and motivated undergraduates. He has published research in nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, and laser physics. In recent years, he has worked to make physics lectures a more interactive experience through the use of classroom response systems and pre-lecture videos.

In the 1970s Dr. Freedman worked as a comic book letterer and helped organize the San Diego Comic-Con (now the world’s largest popular culture convention) during its first few years. Today, when not in the classroom or slaving over a computer, Dr. Freedman can be found either flying (he holds a commercial pilot’s license) or with his wife, Caroline, cheering on the rowers of UCSB Men’s and Women’s Crew.

IN MEMORIAM: HUGH YOUNG (1930—2013)

H ugh D. Young was Emeritus Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. He earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from that university. He earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956 and retired in 2004. He also had two visiting professorships at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Young’s career was centered entirely on undergraduate education. He wrote several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a coauthor with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory textbooks. In addition to his role on Sears and Zemansky’s University Physics, he was the author of Sears and Zemansky’s College Physics.

Dr. Young earned a bachelor’s degree in organ performance from Carnegie Mellon in 1972 and spent several years as Associate Organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh. He often ventured into the wilderness to hike, climb, or go caving with students in Carnegie Mellon's Explorers Club, which he founded as a graduate student and later advised. Dr. Young and his wife, Alice, hosted up to 50 students each year for Thanksgiving dinners in their home.

Always gracious, Dr. Young expressed his appreciation earnestly: “I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my colleagues at Carnegie Mellon, especially Professors Robert Kraemer, Bruce Sherwood, Ruth Chabay, Helmut Vogel, and Brian Quinn, for many stimulating discussions about physics pedagogy and for their support and encouragement during the writing of several successive editions of this book. I am equally indebted to the many generations of Carnegie Mellon students who have helped me learn what good teaching and good writing are, by showing me what works and what doesn’t. It is always a joy and a privilege to express my gratitude to my wife, Alice, and our children, Gretchen and Rebecca, for their love, support, and emotional sustenance during the writing of several successive editions of this book. May all men and women be blessed with love such as theirs.” We at Pearson appreciated his professionalism, good nature, and collaboration. He will be missed.

Islamic Technology: An Illustrated History, by Ahmad Y. al-Hassan, Donald R. Hill

Although the contributions of Islamic civilisations to science have long been recognised, the application of this scientific expertise to technology had been neglected until the publication of this then pioneering 1986 text. The book begins to remedy that neglect, first by celebrating the richness and ingenuity of the world of Islamic technology and then by pointing the way forward to its more detailed exploration. Lavishly illustrated, this book explores the major technological achievements of Islamic civilisations, namely the public works of civil engineering, the machines and mechanical devices which served to control water, provide power, serve as instruments or to amuse.

A book that also asks questions
By Gogol
Around the same time that Professor Nasr began publishing works dealing with so called 'Islamic science' this book came out. Filled with illistations it goes through the history of science and technology as they were practiced in the middle east up until the 19th century. It also looks at the contributions made by Muslim/Middle Easter scientists to science in general more interesingly it also asks questions as to why science declined in the 'Muslim world' and compares it with the rise of science in the West.

An exellent book that asks more than a few difficult questions some of which are still awaiting answers.

(for some info) "Publisher's Note: In this lavishly illustrated survey, a historian and an engineer present a pioneering survey of the major achievements of Islamic civilization. They examine the public works of civil engineering, the machines and mechanical devices that served to control water, provide power, serve as instruments or amuse. They also explore chemical processes, textile, leather and paper manufacture, agricultural and food production, mining, and metallurgy."

The Faith of a Writer: Life, Craft, Art, by Joyce Carol Oates

A tribute to the brilliant craftsmanship of one of our most distinguished writers, providing valuable insight into her inspiration and her method

Joyce Carol Oates is widely regarded as one of America's greatest contemporary literary figures. Having written in a number of genres -- prose, poetry, personal and critical essays, as well as plays -- she is an artist ideally suited to answer essential questions about what makes a story striking, a novel come alive, a writer an artist as well as a craftsman.

In The Faith of a Writer, Oates discusses the subjects most important to the narrative craft, touching on topics such as inspiration, memory, self-criticism, and "the unique power of the unconscious." On a more personal note, she speaks of childhood inspirations, offers advice to young writers, and discusses the wildly varying states of mind of a writer at work. Oates also pays homage to those she calls her "significant predecessors" and discusses the importance of reading in the life of a writer.

Oates claims, "Inspiration and energy and even genius are rarely enough to make 'art': for prose fiction is also a craft, and craft must be learned, whether by accident or design." In fourteen succinct chapters, The Faith of a Writer provides valuable lessons on how language, ideas, and experience are assembled to create art.

From Publishers Weekly
In 12 short thematic essays and an interview, all previously published, the hyper-prolific author of novels (Blonde), story collections (Faithless), plays (In Darkest America) and poems (Tenderness) examines the writing life, aiming to focus on "the process of writing more than the uneasy, uncertain position of being a writer." Oates advises young writers to read widely, takes a nostalgic glance back at childhood influences, waxes poetic on the joys of running and its relation to writing, and tackles the inner trajectories of the creative process. The essays are peppered with anecdotes concerning writers' trials, doubts and influences; these well-selected snippets form the most enjoyable and illuminating aspect of the book. If Oates's own insights don't always live up to the wit and beauty of such quoted authors as T.S. Eliot and D. H. Lawrence, it may be because she gives herself comparatively little room to wrestle with such broad concepts as inspiration and failure. Oates's suggestion that writers as a breed apart may irritate the "ordinary reader" she refers to (whom, she suggests, might not know that "no story writes itself") and may even make writers uncomfortable (to write, she says, is to "invite angry censure from those who don't write, or who don't write in quite the way you do....Art by its nature is a transgressive act, and artists must accept being punished for it"). But Oates obviously understands the faith that writing, that "juncture of private vision and the wish to create a communal, public vision" takes, and young writers especially may find words of wisdom here.

From Booklist
Few can match Oates in the breadth, depth, and passion of her literary experiences and expertise. In her newest and most confiding essay collection, she generously shares the private side of her story-steeped life, musing over the one-room schoolhouse in rural New York State she so loved, the now cellular influence of Alice in Wonderland, and the nearly symbiotic connection between running and writing ("Joyce runs like a deer!" she recalls a boy exclaiming, a memory not as benign as it might seem, given the brute intentions of her pursuers). Art is a mystery, born most often of pain, Oates attests as she shrewdly and beguilingly dissects the quirkiness of inspiration and the unexpected felicity of failure, the enigma of the imagination and the necessity of craft. Gloriously well read and unfailingly curious about those who have shared her obsession, most notably Woolf, Lawrence, James, and Faulkner, Oates is commanding in her knowledge and deeply moving in her candor, such as when she notes that people always ask how she writes so much, rather than why. Very Inspirational
By Cory Fosco
This review was written as an assignment for a graduate school course in the creative writing program at Northwestern University:

"The Faith of a Writer: Life, Craft, Art" by Joyce Carol Oates

Publisher: Ecco

Number of Pages: 176

Year Published: September 23, 2003

Price: Paperback version is $11.95; hardcover version is $21.95 (Paperback is widely available and discounted at Amazon.com; Hardcover version is available through Amazon.com, but via other sellers (used); also available at the Northwestern University Library).

Ideal Audience: This book would be useful in many classroom settings. The youngest audience would probably be high school level junior and senior "Introduction to Creative Writing" students. If used in an undergraduate or graduate level creative writing setting, the essays would be best utilized as both inspiration and models for future individual writing. This would also be very helpful in a "Continuing Education" program, possibly associated with a local community center, library or community college.

Brief Summary: This book contains 12 essays and a brief interview with Oates (led by Greg Johnson). The essays explore Oates' inspirations and motivations for becoming a writer. She offers specific advice to young writers ("write your heart out" and to read as often as they can. Oates touches on her first memories as a child and how the book, "Alice in Wonderland," had a profound affect on her life. She also examines her passion for running and illustrates how running feeds her mind and allows her to be very creative. Other essays discuss failure, inspiration (of other writers), how to read as a writer, the process of self-criticism, and a glimpse of Oates' writing studio. The interview was conducted shortly after Oates published her longest novel (752 pages) in 2000, "Blonde."

Representative Section/Excerpt:

(From "To a Young Writer"):

Write your heart out. Never be ashamed of your subject, and of your passion for your subject. Your "forbidden" passions are likely to be the fuel for your writing... What advice can an older writer presume to offer a younger? Only what he or she might wish to have been told years ago. Don't be discouraged! Don't cast sidelong glances, and compare yourself to others among your peers! (Writing is not a race. No one really "wins." The satisfaction is in the effort, and rarely in the consequent rewards, if there are any). And again, write your heart out.

(From "First Loves: From "Jabberwocky" to "After Apple Picking"):

There are two primary influences in a writer's life: those influences that come so early in childhood, they seem to soak into the very marrow of our bones and to condition our interpretation of the universe thereafter; and those that come a little later, when we are old enough to exercise some control of our environment, and our response to it, and have begun to be aware not only of the emotional power but the strategies of art.

Strength: This book is very inspirational and filled with models that can be used a "jumping off" points for writers in their own work. It can be a great tool to use in a classroom setting if a teacher prefers not to use writing triggers or prompts to engage the class in an exercise.

Weakness: A big weakness of this book is Oates' inability to dig deeper and reveal her main inspirations for writing. Although there are sections within the material that Oates' opens up and offers a glimpse of herself, overall, the book is about other people and their techniques/inspirations, etc.

Urgency Rating: Moderate; if you plan on teaching any genre of writing it can be useful in many ways, especially as models (versus triggers or prompts). The most useful parts were the following essays: "My Faith as a Writer," because it made me think about my own "faith" as a writer and think about my earliest memories of the importance of writing in my life; "To a Young Writer," because it is very inspirational/motivational--great advice from an accomplished writer; and "Reading as a Writer: The Artist as Craftsman," because it offers great advice about the craft of reading to expand knowledge in our own writing versus reading for enjoyment.

Young wizards Nita and Kit face their most terrifying challenge yet: Nita's little sister, Dairine. Not only is Dairine far too smart for an eleven-year-old, she also has recently become a wizard, and worse yet, a wizard with almost limitless power. When Dairine's computerized wizard's manual glibly sends her off on her novice adventure—her Ordeal—Kit and Nita end up chasing her across the galaxy, trying to catch up with Dairine before she gets into trouble so deep that not even her brains can resuce her.

Amazon.com Review
Don't take brilliant, shrewd Dairine Callahan for just any bratty younger sibling. Impatient for adventure, knowledge, and recognition, she finds her sister Nita's wizardry manual and reads the Oath aloud. Disappointingly, nothing happens. But when her family's new computer arrives, Dairene discovers more than the standard issue system software on it and launches herself on a reckless, universe-wide, high-voltage magical conflict with the Lone Power. Diane Duane's storytelling is skillfully mythic and wittily referential; Dairine's discovery and shaping of a new form of life is wondrous. For maximum enjoyment, read So You Want To Be A Wizard and Deep Wizardry first.

From Publishers Weekly
This continuation of the escapades of teenage wizards Nita and Kit centers on Nita's little sister, Dairine, whom Nita thinks is simply too smart for her own good. But when the family PC clones itself and suggests Dairine go to New York, Nita and Kit go along as chaperones, determined to keep her out of trouble. But they're too late: Dairine has read the book of wizardry and is on her wizard's test. There's nothing that the two girls can do to help her, as she must complete the difficult and dangerous test by herself. Duane is tops in the high adventure business, and her latest offering is no exception. Deftly pairing comic and sensitive scenes, this rollicking yarn will delight readers as they watch Dairine's transformation from pesky kid sister to strong-willed heroine. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-- In this sequel to So You Want to Be a Wizard (1983) and Deep Wizardry (1985, both Delacorte), Duane takes her young wizards, Nita and Kit, into the farthest reaches of space. Nita's younger sister, Dairine, plunges impetuously into wizardry, propelled not by the manual Nita and Kit found so convenient, but by a computer. An experienced hacker at age 11, Dairine discovers that her family's new computer comes equipped with a software wizard's manual that enables it to copy itself, shrink to pocket size, and transport Dairine across the universe. Alternate chapters follow rescue efforts by Nita and Kit. Reunited on a distant planet, the three children, together with beings Dairine and the computer have created, confront the Lone One, the biblical Lucifer, over nothing less than the salvation of the universe. Audacious in theme as L'Engle's time trilogy (Farrar), Duane's story is a homage to the science fiction of the 1950s, particularly Heinlein. The imaginative BEMs (Bug Eyed Monsters) are drawn from this tradition, as is one of the best scenes in the book, a chase through a spaceport crowded with alien lifeforms. Although the plot keeps readers guessing, the narrative flow is interrupted by chunks of undigested information about computers and astronomy. Duane's vision never rises above the pop Jungian theology of the Star Wars films, to which she constantly refers. Recommended where readers have enjoyed the earlier books. --Margaret A. Chang, Buxton School, Williamstown, MA

Diane Duane
By Hugh Rutledge
The first in this series than moves outside Diane Duane's familiar home ground-- it moves far outside that ground (beyond the red-shift limit of the universe.) More importantly, it is a great book about being sisters, about the border of friendship and romance, and about finding one's place in the world.

Older reader disappointed
By Barney L. Blankenship
I am an older reader who enjoyed the Harry Potter books and I thought this series might be fun to read. I was very disappointed.

On page 102 the author states, in third person narrative, that 1) the earth spins at 17,000 mph, 2) the earth travels in its orbital path at 175,000 mph and 3) that the sun travels at 115,000 mph. These are all grossly incorrect. 1) should be 1040 mph. 2) should be 67,000 mph, and 3) is 490,000 mph.

Some may consider this unimportant. But why should readers be exposed to 'facts' that seem to be just made up. Scientific facts are not trivia. On page 145 the author uses light-years as a unit of time. This is the mark of a true ignoramus.

Everything else about this book is at this level. The plot, the descriptions, the action sequences would barely get a C- in freshman English. How did this get in print?

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Starting off 19 days after Unbreakable (Little, Brown, 2013) ended, Kennedy Waters's story continues as she deals with her mother's death and having unknowingly released the demon Andras from bondage. The teen is struggling with the aftereffects of her mistake and the fact that being Unmarked, her connection to the Legion (a group of teens whose charge is to protect the world from demon invasion) is increasingly tenuous. Separated from the Legion and forcibly placed at Winterhaven Academy by her aunt, Kennedy is helplessly aware of the havoc that the loose demon is causing. Unspeakable evil has been unleashed upon the world and young girls (who bare a remarkable resemblance to Kennedy) go missing daily without a trace. When Jared discovers the protagonist's whereabouts, he reunites her with the rest of the group. Kennedy's unmarked status makes it obvious that for mere survival, the missing fifth member of the Legion needs to be found as soon as possible. In their quest to find the mystery member, the teens soon discover just how deep Kennedy's past is entwined in the groups' existence. The story's twists and turns have riveting appeal and will keep readers engaged with a perfect balance of romance, fantasy, adventure, and intrigue. The narrative pace is fast and filled with suspenseful anticipation from the start. The Boston setting allows the author to interweave historic sites and events into the fantastical story line.—Sabrina Carnesi, Crittenden Middle School, Newport News, VA

A Thrillingly Creepy Adventure That Will Have You SCREAMING For More...
By Alicia
4.5 Stars

UNMARKED was one of my most anticipated books of 2014!! I was dying to get my hands on an ARC because I couldn't bare to wait any longer. And I was sooo happy after weeks later and 2 begging emails, an copy of UNMARKED arrived on my doorstep, and I was elated!!! I was jumping up and down like an idiot!! But I was a happy idiot, so I didn't care!! I immediately cracked it open, unable to wait any longer...and, oh the joy I found within it's pages!! The scary, terrifying, glorifying, world that I adored!!!

I love Kami Garcia's writing style, she always sucks me in from the beginning and glues me to the pages. The story is so addicting and satisfying, that I literary wanted to stomp my feet like a little kid, screaming "I want it NOW" when I was done this book. Seriously, it was that amazing!!!

THE PLOT...

The world has become a living nightmare...your worst fears are coming true, people are dying, killing, and torturing others because they have a thirst for blood, a lot of blood.

Andras, a powerful demon has been set free and wrecking havoc on the world. Killing and controlling anyone he pleases and turning their world into hells playground, and he's just getting started...

Kennedy is the one who set Andras free from his eternal prison. She is the one who is responsible for all the lives that have and will be lost at the hands of the vengeful demon, but she vows to stop him, or die trying!

Kennedy has finally been reunited with the other members of the Legion. Well not the other members, because she's not even sure if she's really even a member of the Legion or not, because she is still unmarked. But Kennedy can't bare the thought to leave. She knows it's not where she belongs, but her heart is pulling her to the only place she ever felt she really belonged, and that's in Jared's arms. Jared, one of the twins who saved her life on more then one occasion from a paranormal being, and the other members of the Legion have become her only family. Since her mother was murdered by a vengeful spirit, and her father walked out on her when she was young, Kennedy has felt alone, until now. So when Jared finds her after their separation, she's ready to get back with the Legion and undo the mess she created that horrible night she unleashed hell upon earth. But that's only "IF" it can even be undone...

As the members of the Legion race against time to find the demon wrecking havoc all over the states, they come face to face with an enemy organization called Illuminati. But what information they bring and secrets they hold, could very well change everything the Legion once thought.

But time is running out as the demons start multiplying, and the deaths become more frequent. The Legion and the Illuminati realize they will have to put aside their differences and work together if they're going to have any chance at finding and destroying the demons once and for all. But when a surprise visit from someone in the groups past surface, and someone else in the group in grave danger, they realize they might just of ran out of time...for everyone!!

THE LEGION is definitely a series I highly recommend! I think fans of supernatural and paranormal books will find this one just as addicting and satisfying as I did!! Even if you're not a big fan of paranormal books, I recommend you still give it a try, because it's not that dark, bloody, gory type read, so you might find yourself enjoying it!!

Overall, UNMARKED was a great second book with twist and turns that satisfied, enough action and drama that kept me entertained, and a continued romance that I loved from the first book!! I will be counting down the days until book #3 is in my happy little hands!!

NOTE: I received an ARC for reviewing purposes. All opinions expressed are my own and are not influenced in any way!!

"Sequel that surpasses the original"
By Jessica L.
While deciding whether or not I really wanted to read this book, I was confronted repeatedly with a review the publisher chose to highlight-- "A rare sequel that surpasses the original."--Ransom Riggs

Now, if this seems like an odd reason to read a book, let me just say I've read the four "Beautiful Creatures," a novella that follows that series (can't remember the title), and the first book in this series. Up to now, it had been my opinion the writing--or maybe the editing--fell a little further with each successive title. I've got to agree with Riggs, however, this book exceeded it's predecessor in the series.

Is this stellar literary fiction that will last centuries; celebrate 25th-, 50th-, and 100th-anniversaries; and go down in the annals as an historic piece of young adult literature? I certainly hope not. However, it did manage to do what it was supposed to--keep me entertained from beginning to end.

To compare it briefly to "Unbreakable," there was less redundant phrasing, fewer over-the-top emotions, and a plot that for the most part did not twist back on itself. Unfortunately, there also weren't the incredibly creepy/scary/psychologically unhealthy supernatural specters. There was one (or two) borderline exciting manifestations, but the all-powerful demon didn't have many teeth, so to speak, and very few weapons in his arsenal.

My advice, if you read "Unbreakable" from beginning to end and weren't completely turned off by the Supernatural fan-fic nature of it, go ahead and give this one a read. I don't think it will disappoint as long as your expectations are reasonably low.

Note: I received a preview electronic galley copy of this title from NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.

Confusing but Overall Interesting
By Amanda Zelaya
When I read the first book in The Legion series I had mixed feelings. I liked it, but I also felt like it had a lot of similarities with the show "Supernatural." I'm way into the whole demon hunting mythology but parts of the books felt like things I'd seen before. I enjoyed it enough to pick up the second book and see what the what is going on in the Legion world.

What I liked: The mythology in the series is very interesting and compelling. Garcia introduced a lot in this next book and though I found myself incredibly confused at times, I was also incredibly interested. I felt like I was trying to unravel the mystery right along with the gang and with each new twist and turn I fell a little further into the story. Not only did the mythological mysteries keep me intrigued, but I love the camaraderie of the gang. Though that their friendship is definitely tested, I still loved their bond.

What I didn't like: Gosh I felt confused at the end there. The big bad seems to have no weaknesses, we've got a new facet with Illuminate and Free Masons that I could barely wrap my mind around, and there was a white dove. It was incredibly difficult to keep track of what was going on at any given time.

Overall this is a fun series for anyone who likes the whole demon hunting thing

[ BACK JACKET ]

Forget strategic planning. What every organization needs today is an inspirational vision of the future – a dream. But this cannot be an unachievable and open-ended fantasy. It must have a clear focus, and it must have a beginning and an end: in short, what you need is a dream with a deadline.

A vision needs to be collaborative, bringing in inputs from all sides and levels of the organization. It should be flexible and open enough to respond to shifts in our current fast-moving business environment. It must have a timetable, so that progress and success can be measured and rewarded. And it has to be realistic. A Dream with a Deadline tells you how to create such a vision for your company. Follow its guidelines and you will end up with a very specific and clear vision that can be visually expressed on a single page.

An invaluable companion for any manager who cares more about making the future happen than watching it happen.

A pretty and expensive package all dressed up but the same drivel
By Kug
I am interested in the topic of strategy and execution and action in business. Spent the last thirty years playing around in the Fortune 50 and while the beginning of the book has a useful metaphor I guess to building the vision with a house, the roof then the supporting beams, it becomes one more pig dressed in a different outfit from then on. Its certainly not bad stuff but I found as the book progressed the advice could be found in any one of a couple dozen business books. I also found much of the advice, as in the case of many of these books, far removed from the ground level of what is really happening in the organization. Way over priced and lacking anything new.

Strategy for Business and Life
By Heidi C. F. Oste
I purchased this book for vision modelling for my business and ended up buying copies for my entire development team (as well as for friends). It is well written, engaging and helped me define a clearer vision. The use of the house model has proven a very effective business tool in terms of keeping on track in our early stage development. I have adopted the model for my own personal vision and found it equally as effective, and thought provoking. I am looking forward to reading Ohlsson's next book.

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, by James A Jr McNamara, William L Brudon, Vincent G Kokich

Dr. James A McNamara, in collaboration with artist William L. Brudon, has published a new book entitled Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. This volume, written in a very readable style, describes the latest advances in contemporary orthodontic and orthopedic treatment, as presented by a leading authority. This book is intended for the orthodontist and staff within a private practice setting. The details of clinical and patient management are described in a clear and precise manner and are based largely on Dr. McNamara's 35 years of clinical experience. The initial eight chapters provide a synthesis of the wide variety of treatments currently available for malocclusions in the sagittal, transverse, and vertical dimensions. The subsequent chapters describe the details of clinical management of fixed appliance therapy (e.g., bracket placement and design - including self-ligating brackets, orthodontic bonding, archwire sequencing, transpalatal arch and utility arch management). Dentofacial orthopedics, including rapid maxillary expansion and extraoral traction, as well as functional jaw orthopedics (Herbst, Twin Block, FR-2 of Fränkel, Bionator) and molar distalizing appliances (Pendulum, Distal Jet, Wilson distalizing arch) then are considered. The management of Class III malocclusion with the orthopedic facial mask, the chin cup and the FR-3 of Fränkel also are discussed in detail. The book also includes two extensive chapters on interdisciplinary treatment written by Vincent G. Kokich, as well as chapters on finishing and retention protocols. The clinical and cephalometric evaluation of the orthodontic patient and the relationship of orthodontic treatment, occlusion, and temporomandibular disorders also are presented. In essence, this book represents an extensive continuing education experience for the practicing orthodontist.

"This is an excellent resource for pathologists who encounter vascular lesions… As with other books in this series, the photographs are of high quality and cover less-common manifestations of particular entities. Much Needed and absolutely Excellent Resource for Vascular Tumors, Proliferations, and Malformations
By Pathoma
Excellent Book. First, there have been no pathology textbooks that have focused exclusively on vascular tumors, proliferations, and malformations. Many textbooks cover these lesions, but they are may not cover them as in depth as they should be as they can occur anywhere in the body. The benefit of this book, while being mainly focused on vascular lesions that predominantly occur in the soft tissue and skin, takes the added step to characterize these lesions in every anatomic site and offers the appropriate differential diagnoses for these sites. Furthermore, this text offers the decision making paradigms and approach to diagnosis necessary to adequately assist the everyday practicing pathologist.

The images are beautiful. The number of clinical photographs, radiographic images, and gross images are probably the most I've seen in any textbook and significantly contribute to the overall quality of the book as it is often reinforced throughout the book how much of a multidisciplinary approach is absolutely necessary to make the diagnosis of certain vascular lesions. The histologic images are very detailed and descriptive offering site specific histology as well as all the histologic variants supporting its use as a reference text. All major tumor entities from the most common to the rare are thoroughly discussed and covered in exceptional detail. The authors and contributors are excellent, all having worked at the top institutions across the country ranging from MD Anderson Cancer Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Emory University, and Cleveland Clinic among others.
